If it floats and its for sale, I\'ve seen it!!!!!!

Remember me, the converted raggie?

I've been off cruising for the last five weeks, and what fantastic weather! Albeit at 5 knots and sometimes as much as 6 knots!!!!!!

With an offer on my yacht I’m ready to make the change. I’m really pleased that I am not the only one to be in a dilemma about Fly bridge or sports boat Graham W. I haven’t got an answer yet but after watching many on Torquay Marina fiddle around with zips every day, and problems storing the plastic and canvas, I guess I’m in favour of fly bridge boats.

Given my budget of £130k to £140k there is a vast selection of older boats to choose from, yet another dilemma! Do I go for the new Sealine F34 or and older 38 to 40 footer?

I looked into Kim’s suggestion of the Sealine 410 with p63s but I didn’t like the aft cockpit and the loss of patio space for the plant pots and spare slippers.

With out any doubt I just love Moose’s Fairline Phantom 37, 38 or even a 40 but they are just a snippet over my budget. I haven’t seen one for sale under £140k. May be Moose will sell me his as I hear he has blown half his electrics up!

So this leaves me putting an offer on a Sealine 360 Statesman with KAD44s. And at 800 hrs I’m a little apprehensive about major engine rebuilds. However before I part with my money I’m off to the boat show to see what else I can get for my £130K.

Oh yes, one more thing troubling me. If I sell my yacht, I have to give up my river mooring in the most beautiful part of Cornwall that costs £550 per year. To change to power, mooring fees jump to £4000 per year. Would you give the mooring up to change to power?

Very confused Cliff

Why do you have to give up your mooring, it's not a esential to keep stinkies in marinas, if the new boat's too big, surely there are other moorings available?

If I were in your situation I think I would be looking very seriously at motor sailors and I'd definitely keep the river mooring. Best of all worlds really IMHO

The local boat yard wont let motor boats in the area! They don't swing the same as keeled yachts because they will bump with wind over tide conditions

We're changing as we are fed up with 6 knots and long journeys at sea. Even a good motor sailor may get you 10 knots, we're looking for 22 to 30 knots. I take the point of a lot of people, you should be happy with what you have got but time at sea is difficult with a 6 year old child.

A Sealine 360 @ £130k even with KAD44's sounds over the odds to me especially with 800hrs. You should be able to get a F36 model for that. I would definitely not buy a new boat because, without doubt, you will want to change it in fairly short order once you find out what you really want out of a motor boat and you will lose money selling a new boat on after only a season or two.
If you want a 'patio door' type motor boat a good Princess 360 with TAMD63L's would be within your budget or for a completely take, why not look at a Nimbus 370 Trawler

Hi cliff. I hear of several raggies converting to power, but almost always in that area of cornwall, where the marinas are a mite too widely spaced apart for meaningful day sailing - you can't "get somewhere else" and come back.

Anyway, £130k eh. Longer hull means a more comfortable ride, no question. The 63s are long-legged bus engines, perhaps a better bet than higher-revving kad44's. Asking prices of 140 will sell easily for 130. But how near the ceiling is that 130? It would be good to be able to have spare loot praps for refitting, a proper service and hiring a skipper along to show you the er lack of ropes. What was wrong with the aft cockpit on the sealine? i mean, the phantom has aft cockpit too, no?

I like the Princess 360, a lot of boat for the money. Sadly wifey didn't like the step ladders to the fly bridge, she said she felt uneasy going up and down. So under instructions from the boss, we have to get a fly bridge with built in steps.

Strange way to choose a boat, when the stairs are the most important feature!! Have you thought of a Stana stair lift..../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Steps

Thats a fair point. Some of us are not as honed and athletic as Haydn so the ladder can be an issue.
That narrows the shortlist then. I do suggest that you take a look at the Nimbus as it has a very unusual but practical accomodation arrangement including very easy internal movement between deck and flybridge

Becareful or Ill introduce you to my other half. She can paralyse a donkey at a range of 100 yards. I also have to be nice to her as she is paying half the costs. Sorry, stairs rule.

I entirely agree. That's way too much over for a 360. They'd better be gold plated KAD44's for that. I bought my Sealine s37 (KAD43's) £110K 1999/2000 model. This superceeded the 360. There are some overpriced 360's about though. Mine was 2 years old with 65 hours on the clocks. An s37 is an option as a down market Fairline alternative. No need for the pipe and slippers, and loads of accommodation. Shopping around does pay off.

Well. I too am having trouble finding a new boat thats any good. They all seem to have stupid rounded seats, so no one can lay down to watch the telly. At least with my old P33. You could take it in turns to lay down whilst the other Queued up!!

S'funny. SWMBO said exactly the same about the ladder vs steps thing, hence the Sealine F36...

Still can't make me mind up.

Fly bridge for me! I want to see the world go by, with or without slippers on. The sport boats have tiny portholes to peer out of when your below.

Step ladder things are far safer than the Moulded steps on all the sealine's, cos' you HAVE to old on to the handles, whereas you think you can stroll up and down the "stairs" and you falls off/forums/images/icons/smile.gif I have heard of several people crashing down from Flybridges at 20kt's/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

BUY A PHANTOM 37!!!!! WITH 63P's

And have you got my PM????

Suspect boats have ladders for v.good reasons otherwise woofty stairs would have been used long before now.A set of wooden stairs wood/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif have been no probs at all to old fashioned shipwright. So why no stairs but always open backed steps even on old pirate ship type things.Maybe probs with standing water.Still when did practicality ever come before "cutting edge design" in certain design studios.
