If I was in charge of the Thames I would....
Raise all bridges to a minimum height of 20'
Send all Rowers to Lakes
Send all Narrowboats to canals
Put out of hours power on all locks
Put speed limits into knots
Raise speed limits to 6 knots
Open pubs/cafes/restaurants every ½ mile
Do away with the hated BSS
Arrange for Inspectors to wash/polish boats on request

ADD: Please feel free to add to this list

If i was in charge of the severn...

1) weirs would be fixed before they started to collapse
2) locks would open after 20:00
3) Trees would be removed off weirs BEFORE they come down the river
4) The river would dreged so the average depth is greater then 3 foot.
5) Spend some licence money on it rather than spending it all on canals.
6) I would shut locks for repair AFTER the season, and tell people when i do
7) Ban all hire narrowboats.
8) Make Gloucester Lock keeps answer the radio (John the lock does)
9) Put in some public moorings that narrowboats cannot use.
10) Make narrowboats take other boats along side.
11) Ban all fishermen, sail boats, rowers, jet skiis, hire boats, british waterways
and all other deviant users.

This is really going to be a bitch list thread, aint it?

Thanks

I thought the river was for all of us but I do tend to agree about the rowers, why are they all miserable and bad tempered - is it cos they don't have an engine - bit like cyclists too!

Agree with hire boaters, changed my mind about ditch crawlers met some nice ones - I couldn't belive it either at first.

Deffinate lack of pubs and lock power should stay on till at least 21:00.

Would like to change some of the users - the ones that sit in their boats and leave you to do the lock for them - take one look at you and assume you work there ! then they don't even say thanks.

Also all lock keeps should be ladies - much more interesting in the summer than grey haired old men ;-)

I'd ban Canada Geese too - have you seen the mess they make.

Also get sailing clubs to stick to set routes so they don't clog the whole river and then shout at you when you don't run aground for them so that they can tack a bit nearer the bank - Sorry but I'm not prepared to put my boat into shallow water cos power is supposed to give way.

It might also be worth telling sail boat owners that you need wind in order to move -some of them sit there for hours on a still day going nowhere - I take it they're optamists !

Peter

Please could you make the bridge minimum height 50 ft with a bit in the middle that opened automatically whenever a taller mast appeared.

Oh, and take down some of the tall buildings which play havoc with the wind direction.

Narrow boats only use the River to get from one canal to another, a necessary evil connecting the Grand Union to the Oxford Canal. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Old Chinese proverb 'Man who sail boat into rice field, soon get into paddy'

I would ban all motor craft on our rivers until the Salmon had re-established itself in its natural climate. For the same reason all use of Kayaks, Cannoes, fishing with lead shot, pollution by agro-chemicals would be punishable by flogging anmd ....

I'd put all the river water back in the sea and build council houses up all the rivers. Devon and Cornwall are of course exempt!!

not wanting to be picky but lead shot hasn't been available, I believe since I was a kid, and that was some time ago. The new stuff is lead free just looks the same. I think the indescriminate dropping of line and hooks does more damage to wildlife IMHO.

Peter

Yeh! You are right about the lead shot and double right about discarded line, I caught up a Swan last year and took a whole load off it's legs.
One thing, I believe it is becoming more popular with Anglers to use barbless hooks.

Yes, barbless hooks are becoming more popular - certainly with the more responsible angler - I've used them for years- since I started carp fishing. That and most of the fishing programs on TV now promote the use of these hooks.

Cor, it's getting like Buttlesuck around here. A touch pedantic if I may respectfully suggest /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

OK , 'Lead shot' isn't lead anymore (except in my tackle bag, cos still have some butnever go fishing with weights any more). But 'weighted' line still most dangerous to wildlife .. as it has more ability to drag down ,,,

Hooks should never , never be left anywhere. If you lose one . recover it. I'm still unsure abou tbarbless hooks , particularly amongst thsoe memebers of the angling fraternity who find them more 'sporting'... another subject in its own right. However I accept that I NEVER fish with barbed hooks on flies any more ... if you have a fly with a barb . easy to debarb....Just use pliers and flatten

Re: : If I was in charge....

Absolutely fair comment, as I knew his younger brother Spence , never bought a drink either. Last time I met him was in a pub on the Hamble, drinking with another deadbeat callled Bill Anchor..who is OBVIOUSLY a pseudonym for me.

The little 'poke' was at Pete , so I even got that wrong !!!

Mucho apologissimo ,,, more appropriate drivel later..

When you instruct the builders who are going to build aforementioneddwellings on the lower reaches, can you please ensure that they abide strictly to the planning regs as published by Y O Tee , volumes 9-14

I am particurly concerned about 3 things.

1) Now that there is no river, I would officially like to live in Chelsea not Sarf Chelsea.
2) I will of course be buying all council houses asap after funding by Westminster Council at major knock-down price as I'm a right wing tory really
3) Please enxure that my private road stretches all the way to WC1 from New Chelsea Village ( Get your hands OFF Ken).

Re: Boatone ????????

Tony (Boatone) has probably been captured by Rowers or members of the TMYC for daring to use their end of the River. Maybe we should start a fund to ransom him back.

Re: Boatone ????????

Shouldn't that read 'set up a fund to ensure that they keep Him?' /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Did they get hlb and tcm as well?

Reminder to shoot rowers on site when next walking dog.
Hated them on Roath Park Lake when I was a kid always ugly miners with fags hanging off lips with snooty little ginger-haired girl bawling her eyes out and Dad insisting on another 10 mins before they went down pub.
