I'm going to take MF to Scotland and sod the fuel costs. Did it with her previous incarnation. It was hardly any distance at all, mind it was about twenty odd years ago. Went from Puffwelly, ended up in Tobermory.

This time it will be from Conway. I know which way I went last time. But which way would you go. It dont have to be the quickest, just the nicest, probably do Crinnan, then up to Oban and Tobermory. Dunno after that, theres no rush to get back.... Um Caladonian sounds interesting. But were not oing al the way round the country, so have to come back. Or flog the boat up there, which is what happened last time.

So rather than me tell folk which way to go, you tell me. We're not made of money, on the other hand we are not short. Not keen on marinas, but do like some sort of facillities as health ait that good.

Hope you do feel well enough to make this trip HLB, as a relative newbie on here I always enjoy reading your posts and would welcome you with a few (or more) halfs from my whisky collection if you come into Kip on the Clyde. A short hop from there would take you through the Kyles of Bute and into Tarbert, loch Fyne (plenty of good pubs and places to eat). A short trip to the Crinan entrance at Ardrishaig and you could meander thru the Canal over anything from 4 hours to 4 days. At the other end of the canal you will exit at Crinan and can choose to visit the Corryvreckan Whirlpool en-route to Oban. From there you could head back over to Tobermory on Mull or head up to the Caledonian Canal, others will tell you what to expect from there cause I've not been, but also plan to go this year. You're in fairly sheltered water most of the way there so there's loads of anchorages if you want to avoid Marinas, but the Marinas are there if you want.

Cheers

David

MF is sort of ruffty tuffty sort of boat. Can suvive through most things with her little Honda generator.

Been to Kip, Done Crinnan, spent a fair time at Troon. Know all about the cow boys on Cumbria.

This wirle pool thingy. Corryvreckan Whirlpool . Surely it cant bother MF??

OK I just wondered if there was another way. MF is not bothered about a few waves, she just deals with them. Surprisingly. No worries. Is Ireland any good, ben there many times, but not up north.

Can't give any suggestion, but I wish you to get better enough to make this trip, and then some!
Sounds like a great journey, btw. I'd love to have the opportunity to make it.

Nose straight up... Then in towards Crinan Canal and through ... some nice anchorages towards Ardfern and also around Caroabh (nice place but high fuel prices, so would avoid fuelling here). Head through Cuan Sound towards Oban (perhaps Loch Spelvie on Mull) and nose up Sound of Mull and into loch Sunart where there are plenty of anchorages (Salen gives great Scollops). Over to Mull & Tobermorey (unless you wish to do Skye... in which case Three Chimneys is supposed to be a nice place to eat). Round via Tiree & Trechnich Isles (anchorages), down to Staffa and West of Mull (anchorages near Ulva). then Iona. Over to Colunsay, between Isla and Jura for Whisky tours, then over to Ireland to follow the east coast before hopping over the Irish Sea... Should be a nice round trip .... with few repetitions, unless weather forces you more inland.

Can anyone remember the couple who did a circumnavigation in a Hardy? Was it a Pilot or a something smaller?

Not sure exactly when they did it but it was Dominic and Nicola Gribbin in a 1993 Hardy Family Pilot, named "Jura Pilot".

They raised several thousand pounds for the Mpotor Neurone Disease Association.

I believe there was a full article in Motor Boats Monthly circa 2006. YBW.com have available an article written by the magazine's then news editor Rob Peake.

Portpatrick is a lovely spot, though not for the faint-hearted, and I'd definitely make it a full daylight approach in calm conditions.

The Crown Hotel ( a well known waypoint to stay at among military aviation types ) on the seafront serves legendary steaks and/or lobster - a friendly, informal place with good rooms too, and the Fernhill up the hill ( NOT the big place to the west ) is very good too.

Hope you are well to enjoy it soon.

Yes, lining up the orange square on the harbour wall with the one on the the house up the street, can be quite interesting, especially when the tide is passing by at about 8 knots!!

No, I was wondering if there is any other sencible route other than IOM, then Portpatrick. I've no charts here, but I cant think of one.
