If i cut the top of a main off would it work as a gaff sail?

Thats a good idea!for the moment my fishing boats on hold!I always seem to find them in the wrong place!Im going to wait until i get back to France.

The traditional fisher sails would have to be cut from new!!I hope to start with my old sails then see how well it goes,

A fisher in the med is becoming an attractive propersition opening a lot more moorings, not to mention canals.

Im also looking at suitable engins

Hyperborean gave you an answer (it would work but not well) and I hope to add to it.

I have done it. The sail worked quite well. A sailmaker did it for me and he was no gaff expert and did not claim to be. I asked that he cut the head to a slight curve, so that the top part of the sail kept its cambered shape. He did, but not quite enough, so the top part of the sail was a bit on the flat side. However it was a cheap solution and got me out there on the water.

Gaff versus bermudan is a llong-standing debate. I believe gaff sails have a number of good things going for them. If you have a short mast, trying to keep area by having a huge roach, as suggested above, means battens up there which have their own complications.

I agree!! I asked becouse i wanted a traditional looking sail for and old wooden fishing boat, and something made from my old sails at no cost!!

I wondered if it had been done and was practical, the sail should be able to drive the boat to wind at least!

As it happens ive postponed getting the fisher, she wont be cut up yet so i have time to look at others

I do agree about the gaff and other stuff perhaps a lug sail afterall???

I have to rush back soon!!!
