If I am wearing a 1.5yd Blue Ensign, what size staff should I have?

I think it is right that a Blue Ensign should be as large as possible to alert your presence to other boat users, and should also have an ensign staff to match.

How long should this staff be if I am wearing a 1.5yd Blue Ensign, and what wood is best to show it off to best advantage?

I have seen staffs that are curved, but maybe these are just warped with age?

Should the top be turned with a carved motif, or left plain?

Should the little roller sheaves be brass, and what backsplice to use on the toggle end?

I am also concerned that the use of a plastic Holt Allen cleat would also spoil the effect.

Could the forum advise?

Anyone who needs to fly a big ensign probably has a small staff. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Rubbish! You WEAR an ensign.

You need a staff large enough to ensure that one of them is always on duty to dip the ensign when required. As you will not be wearing it at night a staff of three should be sufficient. I don't see that you will require any more or less than you did with a Red Ensign.

Edit: Sorry misunderstood the question. You were asking about the length of the stick you nail it to?

Jim,

If in doubt wear it at your back stay!

I wear a Blue Ensign when its me aboard and not training, and I have a 1.5m stick. Its OK for the red one, but a tad small for the blue.

RNSA have info with regard to sizes!!!!!!!!!!

Al.

Jim you are a "Presence" in your own lifetime

i am somewhat warped /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif but my staff is "Curved Laminated Teak" /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif "whittled" by my own fair hand

a bronze sheave would be in keeping with the blue Ensign /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

a small Teak Cleat would also be in keeping with the Staff receiving at least 14 coats of Epifanes /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

may i also point-out the the Striking Of Colours @ appropriate times /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Your warrant is at risk of being withdrawn if you do not strike the colours at dusk & rehoist at dawn - or if your ship wears the warranted ensign while you are not aboard.

You are also REQUIRED to fly the relevant warranted club's burgee at the masthead (the most senior possible location). It's all great fun innit.

You should have a butler, a couple of maids, a groom and a full crew for your yacht! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

We don't have a groom, and prefer to refer to my man as a Valet, but we do have a Boatswain on retainer.

My Equerry advised that I should, and made the arrangements accordingly. You meet such nice people of course, but if they are wearing a Blue Ensign, its like knowing their tailor, and thus of course their introduction can be effected.

One does think one got a superior sort of reply over on S'Butt.

PBO's rather common - it demeans the blessed Blue Ensign (note! capital letters) being discussed on PBO.

One would suggest one contacts the moderators to have this thread moved forthwith to a more fitting forum. Does Yachting World host a forum?

I shall look out for your large pole before knocking on the boat next time I am at Carters.

Surely anyone who has the warrant for a "blue" also has alackey to delegate such menial tasks as hoisting to!

"To whom to delegate such tasks".

Tush!

Said lackey perhaps one of the class/status obsessed people who get exercised at seeing anyone who has something they do not, and then sees fit to ridicule it in childish pique - tolerance and a lack of public bigotry not excepted...
