As antifouling is such a drag - lift boat, scrape hull, fair in the dodgy bits, antifoul, boat back in, aching back, sore wallet - why doesn't some smartarse boat designer design a boat that works better with limpets and seaweed attached?

Limpets

At low water last weekend I noticed what a brilliant job the limpets do of keeping the harbour wall free from weed, slime, barnacles etc. Great bare patches, easily the size of the underwater area of my yacht, where a group of no more than twenty are browsing. They seem to prefer smooth areas.

Do you think some genius could GM an aerodynamic limpet for yacht use? Or for the anti-GM'ers, train them to crawl above the waterline Friday evenings prior to the weekend outing?

Mackerel never seem to have barnacles or limpets on them so why not skin enough of them and stick their skins on instead of antifoul?

Wasn't someone trying to develope an anti-foul based on the chemicals in fish skin? Or was it an ultra slippery smooth coating that stopped the fouling getting a decent grip? Mike.

Why not attached a couple of lampreys? - they scare off the barnacles, eat the weed and if you attach them to your bonding system you will not need to by expensive anodes!
