Idle question re secondary ports

Just what I do - and keep my fingers crossed! Didn't work a couple of years ago coming into the Deben though!

not forgetting to use the handy mobile to phone the port/harbour and ask.. er look me hearty, i cant be Bxxxd with all this, is there any water over where you are at 17.58? And he 'll say, well now Capn, dont really know coz i cant work out all this Bxxxd secondary port stuff, but peering over the jetty wall, looks likes theres plenty.
Only RYA doesnt seem to want to teach that....

Exactly my attitude Tome. What is the point of a highly accurate calc just to find out you have 6 meters to spare.

If a rough in my head calc gave less than 2 or 3 meters spare thaen I do it properly.Less than that if theres no swell and the tides rising.

Don't do that with Southerlys into Chichester they cheat.
A "Friend" of mine who did that got severely puttied.

Never mind secondary ports...can we get differences between reference ports? If we could we would only ever have to pick up a freebie tide table for a reference port every year, we could then estimate the tide anywhere. But that might put the almanac sellers out of business.
Thinking about it, this is a serious question.

Re: Yes

And got shouted at for doing it too

30+ kts of wind and we're short tacking on North shore of Solent towards Beaulieu River.

I tacked with 2M on (uncalibrated) sounder.

Skipper shouts at me for tacking too early

I explain that sounder is uncalibrated, we have onshore wind the pressure is around 960 (it was during the storm ENZA sailed throu on rtw in 80 days thing) and we,re an hour short of high spring tide and if he wanted the (2 DAY old!) boat aground it would likely be there for 6 months.

So he made someone else drive - and they tacked at 2m as well.

Rule of twelths???

Way I do it is look at tide tables. Compute whether tide is rising or falling. Look at shore to see how much seaweed is showing. Stick the anchor down in about 4 meters. Dig it in. That's it.

Not at all perfect.

Dover tide curve isn't regular at all - 5 hours of flood, 7½ hours of ebb on springs. Caused by the same notorious irregularity that affects all the Channel. I believe Lerwick (Shetlands) has the most regular tide curve of the UK standard ports - and also the smallest range.
