Idiot factor

Sadly I see a large dose of the 'idiot factor' creeping in to what was a great forum you doubt it - then read 'Cheapskate' replies if you have a day to spare

Surely a little laxity in posting helps? Statistics are fine for computers but I want opinions, these are better understood if you have some idea of the characters sense of humour / viewpoint on life.

I posted 'Cheapskate' and would rather the threads contained relevent info. Cutting through the nonsense to get to the interesting replys took quite a while. I'm all for humourous messages but I felt as if my posting was hi-jacked by the flag people!

Why not start another posting if you feel you're going off at a tangent?

I like the humour element, in addition to the boating content, so it is not such a prob for me. Maybe we could modify the title of a subject with a code? "...NM" meaning "No Message" as has already been established. How about "...Hum" for "Humourous" reply, "...Tan" for "Tangent", "...HJ" for "Hijack" or some such thing?

Blown away as I am by the functionality of his message board, I'm surprised you can't select an appropriate icon to categorise your message when posting a reply.

Are you reading this YBW?? This is a perfectly reasonable user requirement.

I think you have hit it spot on. You can find the odd interesting/informative contribution but by and large this forum has been hi-jacked by a small bunch of saddos who use it as a platform to air their particular puerile brand of humour(?). I'm surprised that IPC tolerate/bear the cost etc. For a more sensible read try PBO Reader to Reader. When their contributors read this, one its no wonder some them hold motor-boaters in such comtempt.

Why don't you go back to the PBO forum. There is a lot of useful input on this forum, mixed with a bit of humour. Sometimes the balance might drift a bit towards one extreme or the other but its still largely fun.
I thought that's why we all went boating, for enjoyment and fun, funnily enough. There is a tendency however, for some of the other forums to take themselves a bit seriously and you are right, contempt is a word which is used.

I wonder who is right and who is wrong?

You've clearly recognised the problem. What I would question is your judgement as to where the balance lies. I contend that there is too little good input to the detriment of the knowledge and experience that is out there. As I said, its being spoilt by a small minority who seem to regard this outlet as their own. The idiots are in charge of the asylum. Are you one of them?

I think I contribute fairly if and when I can answer a question but feel the PBO forum is the best place to ask and receive answers to tekkie questions whilst this forum leans towards a bit of fun. Isn't it rather like a bar where you have the misery gits sitting discussing the fate of the dingleberries on their rectum whilst others are having a knees-up? Neither side understanding the other?

Re: The Clue is in the title...

I thought this forum was called Motor Boat CHAT...ie. all sorts of exchanges of information , not constrained to only factual helpful discussion. When you socilaise, do you only impart factual informative and helpful comments....or do you ....erm.....chat?

I take my boating seriously enough to have accumulated around 40 years experience without having ever
a) Sunk
b) Caused another boat to sink
I think thats OK and in that experience there is a lot of real time, hands on sorting things out. But the overriding reason for boating is, I do it for fun and I enjoy a bit of banter on this forum. Very few of the the regulars have met but we have, through the written word got to know each other and enjoy a laugh and a joke, sometimes at each other's expense. Equally, look at the serious questions on the forum and you will find that, even if the thread sometimes goes off at a bit of a tangent, they generally all get serious answers also. Sorry if our humour offends your sensibilities but the option to review whats on the forum is yours, no one forces you to be here.

You must be older (and wiser?) than we all thought. Must be difficult to sink a boat when we all know you don't have one anymore.............or is there something you're not telling us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you are 'new user' and your handle is 'mudflats' i'm possibly on the verge of feeling just a teeny weeny bit hurt that you think I'm an idiot.
I contributed somewhat to the 'idiot factor' you refer to because I decided to use a flag against my posts instead of a photo of myself (didnt want you all to know I looked like an idiot!) God bless you all - you decided you liked the idea so suddenly there were lots of flags and the forum became visually alive and cheerful. ***** stopped moaning, **-** became less agressive, PaulineB decided to let us know what she REALLY looks like (anyone complaining...?), and I even answered your post requesting info on sources for marine ply offcuts (dont know if you read it or found it useful tho' 'cos you never said).

Boomer - Are you brave enough to list those who you think of as idiots - and why you believe such a derogatory label is required? As you registered on the 10th of October 13 days is IMHO hardly sufficient exposure to the forum to form such a strong opinion.

Ask a serious question of the forum and you will get good answers. In some cases rather biased answers and the thread tends to drift away but if you want to control the direction of the thread you have to offer some guiding input. It's no good sitting on the sidelines saying well that was a waste of time. If it had been me I'd have done / said this. Contribute my man, contribute.

IPC manage the forums and moderate them (as I know!) - I came to subscribe to MBM after finding this forum, and I'm thinking about PBO but they seem to dislike Motor Boaters so I shall keep buying it whenever the PBO forum seems to indicate that it has something I'd like to read about.

The web is wide world, and everyone is free to say what they like. If this forum gets a bit to wild it is reined in either by the regular (idiots) or by the moderators.

And if you don't like what it is saying - then you're free not to read. But don't whinge that it is no use to you or not what you thought it was going to be, make it what you want.

Nuff said.

Re: Byron, you\'ve just wrecked my make up

Well its true. I often look around at these annual dinners and see the misery tables, one bottle of house wine between the lot of them earnestly debating who has the most serious hernia and what the grub was like at someone's funeral. My tables I am glad to say groans under the weight of wine and we have to keep plonking people back on their seats as they keep falling off laughing.

I prefer to think of myself as merely between boats and its only been for a couple of months - albeit the first couple of months for twenty odd years. Don't worry, you'll be the first to know when I get my feet wet again!
