So I saw a boat listed on ebay, thought I wanted it, bid a grand as an opening offer, knowing that it would not meet reserve, phoned the bloke up to arrange going to see it, agreed with him that if I wanted it I'd make an offer, he could either accept or leave the auction running.

Took just over an hour to get there, had a look over it, decided it was the boat for us, he said he was keen to sell outside the auction, was concerned that as it was a bit of a project that he might get messed about by some rose tinted spectacle wearing ebay geek.

He said he wanted 2.5k, would stop the auction, I said, ok, 2.5 it is, gave him a deposit cheque for 50 quid (his suggestion of deposit size).

Agreed collection would be sat 1st March. Took half day off, got tow bar fitted to BMW, arranged trailer hire.

Got an email from his 'co owner' this morning, apparently, he thinks its worth more, so they plan to re-list it. No mention of my deposit (its not been cashed).

There is a contract of sale in place, price agreed, deposit paid and accepted.

Flaming numpty.

GRR.

50 quid not going to ruin my life, although I bloody want it back, he can whistle if he thinks I'll pay more. In fact he can whistle whilst I shove it up his arse!

Is there a piece of paper with signatures ?....

If so you have a a route to a lien on the boat if you wanted to get heavy with him.

However, it's likely that eBay will be less than helpful, as you have made the offer outside the auction rules.

Only paper is my cheque.

There's no point, put it down to experience.

I might be inclined when they list it again to report it as a scam as I have paid a deposit....

ETA - Dont call me Gludy.

Bid him £20,000 and then tell him you think it's worth LESS.

Ah, the double edged sword of life eh? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was at the other side a few months back

Guy came down, liked boat, gave me deposit. So with the deposit I did the few jobs I said i'd do (service, clean etc). We sign paperwork, I take boat off the market

Then he emails me saying that he doesn't want it and want's his deposit back. Obviously he never saw his money as i'd spent more on cleaning, service etc.

There are weird people in this world. Its my own fault for not taking a substantial deposit (ie. 10%). Lesson learned, next time boat isint SOLD until I get payment in full, and deposit will be at least 10%

If i'd nothing better to do at the time I would have followed it up with a solicitor but I was just too busy at the time

Ben,

That sounds rough! Did the owner tell you there was a co-owner of the boat? I think that it is bang out of order.

I must admit I have bagged a bargain or two and then waited to pick item up....and never got it. On Ebay If I get a bargain, I jump in the car and pick it up now. People agree to daft prices then regret it. Same all over the boatwaorld, loads of people have unrealistic figures in their head.

The way that you have been treated though is disgraceful!

Cheers

I knew there was a co owner. Pair of bells ends.

He left me a voicemail, he'll post the cheque back to me.

The annoying bit is that it was ideal for what I wanted and I have tastes in boats that are far off the beaten track!

Talking about Gludy, did it ever come out what happened between him and the welsh importers of that boat he made a Video of?

Feel free to speculate for my sake /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
