Any suggestions on making good the panel?

I'm going to move the VHF to where the stereo is, and put in a blanking plate to balance it on the left, up to the edge of the switch panel. However, below and to the left of the switch panel there will be some gaps, so I may attempt to re-veneer the entire left side. The other similar veneered inserts in the saloon and galley are getting a facelift with very thin white laminate, but that may look wrong here due to the way the panel is cut.

Any suggestions what wood (veneer) this is? Sapele?

Unless you know what you are doing don't waste time trying to match the panel with veneer. Getting the grain right is hard enough but you will almost certainly have problems getting the colour right and it could easily end up looking like a dogs dinner. Either replace the panel completely or fill the hole with something which makes no pretence of matching.

+1 For the time being I would cover the hole with a teak pencil rack or phone holder and at a later date you may have another more useful item to add. I think your veneer is teak this striping is often seen it is cheaper than blonde teak but the colour is not as dark as mahogany.

Having read again what you want to do, doubt you will ever get a good repair veneering just the small area. I had the bottom of the loo door reveneered but it needed staining. Looked good when it was first done, but it has aged differently and is now very obvious - but fortunately on the inside so not on show. On the other hand I built a shoe locker in the forecabin using an offcut of sapele veneered ply which, because it is a panel blends in well.

So, either replace the whole door panel within the frame or cover the lower half with something contrasting.

Try Plastic?

This poor photo does not do it justice but on our Fulmar some years ago we overcame the same with a sheet of 5mm black acrylic. Doing it again I would round the corners and the shiny plastic could look really smart. A further advantage is that face fixing allows good access to wiring behind. New sapele will always tend to stick out so why not make a feature of the change?

OK, I've had a play around. The panels in the lockers all pop out backwards; they only have dots of glue, as I discovered when I fell into one!

My plan is to resurface the panels with the thin laminate used for kitchen cupboards, something like this before/after mock-up, which I think looks good:

I tried the same thing on the control panel door and I'm not so sure:

So if I can get this panel out, I may have to redo the whole thing in sapele.

Robbins Timber sell flexible veneer sheets. I have just ordered up a Teak one to cover an area in the galley where formica has been removed from a bulkhead. Unfortunately the sheets are only sold as 8'x4', so I have had to buy a whole sheet; 1.5 mm thick. It's pricy, they do Sapele as well. It may be possible to apply this over the whole panel using some jiggery pokery if you want that wood look. Of course any suitable ply/wood could be used to fill the hole then as it would be hidden.

I am using thick card and a glue gun to make the template, very easy really to get an accurate template. Food for thought, good luck.

I have used quite a lot of the Robbins 1.5 mm teak ply in the past it is well over £130 a sheet but will look superb , I believe K J Howells have a cheaper one on their website but they may not deliver also if you want the stripes you must get quarter sawn veneer as opposed to roll sawn.
