Shaft Seal.jpg

Anybody able to name what this shaft seal is? I have an awful feeling I knew what it was, and even discussed here many years ago (I think about 2014/15). Hasn't been replaced in many years, and the boat has been laid up for almost four years, thinking it needs replacing & much easier to replace like for like.

Looks like a Radice seal.
Agreed, Radice seal but with a bolt(?) placed in the water tube attachment.
My new Radice seal has a water tube attachment/spigot where that bolt appears to be. Did you fit that bolt and if so how is it secured? I wonder if its a different seal if the bolt is actually designed to be in there IE screwed/threaded fitting?
If it is a Radice then it's done really well as they state replacement every 3 years. Do you grease it every 6 months with the silicone grease?

radice shaft seal - Google Search

I remember the engine installer saying it was a copy of a Volvo shaft seal. It didn't have a water feed & I've done many long trips motoring on her so assume not an issue. It needed a couple of squirts of grease once a year and also needed to "burp" air out of it, again like the Volvo one.
However this has focussed my thoughts, clearly better to go back to those engineers (French Marine on the East Coast who installed a new 2YM15 in her, but left the shaft seal in place) and get them to replace as necessary.

A water feed is not necessary on low hp engines, so the tube should act as a vent by being led above the waterline. eliminates the need for venting (burping) which you have to do with the solid Volvo version.

I'm still interested how that bolt is fitted to the water spigot?
Not sure calling a Radice seal a Volvo copy is correct. I did hear, on here, that Radice make the Volvo seal.
I just swapped my old Volvo seal out for the Radice type and bar longevity which I can't comment on yet as its 2 weeks old, I think it's an improvement over the Volvo seal. It has a proper grease port so no messing around with McDonald's straws and no burping required. I used silicone tube on my spigot so can clearly see the water level which gives confidence that there is no air in the seal (still water lubricated)
