ideas required for fix: leak on cooliong system

Morning All
I noticed a small but significant leak on a copper pipe to rubber boot connection at the exhaust end of the heat exchanger. engine is a Perkins M67.

Yesterday i replaced the hose clip with a new one, cleaned up the copper pipe and refitted.

leak is now worse. tightening up the hose clip makes no difference.

the copper pipe section appears to be still round.

I need to fix this as the boat is being moved several hundred miles this week. Ok it's a yacht, so i do have flappy things but i have 40 miles of river and a schedule to keep so there will be some motoring.

I'm hopeful that the accumulated knowledge on here will have some sure-fix solutions. Ideas i have had are;

• wrap copper in amalgamating tape to increase diameter of pipe.
• two beads of hot glue around the copper pipe positioned to be above and below the hose clip.
• see if i can get a local fabricator to increase diameter of pipe or fashion some kind of barb.

other suggestions gratefully recieved.

assuming you're pipe and hose are both in good nick, and the water is coming out between the rubber and copper.

perhaps changing to a smaller jupliee clip is the answer (the flat section under the screw won't seal too well if the clip is too big).

failing that, I typically bodge with some liquid gasket.

your tape may help to rectify a large diameter mismatch, but the longer term solution then would be to get the proper fitting hose.

Wrap joint with self amalgamating tape on the outside. Ie over the jubilee clip,hose and copper tail. Fix it when the boat is moved.

Clean copper pipe

clean inside rubber pipe.

liberal application of sikkaflex

asemble tighten clip fully

allow to cure.

it wont leak again.


We have 5 inch exhausts to silicon rubber. almost impossible to seal without the above method. It will be a certain fix.
