Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if it would be possible to pick your brains?

The big 40 is looming for me this summer and I want to go on a special holiday with my family (wife and two boys, 4 and 6).

Being boat mad it obviously has to revolve around boats / water. Whilst chartering a super yacht would be my dream unfortunately it's way beyond my means!

The motor cat charter in Greece featured in MB&Y looks like quite an exciting idea although I don't have my ICC so would have to attain that first.

Would love to hear if anyone has any great ideas??

Thanks in advance :)

Your profile is a bit sketchy .

Looks like a 42 or 47 Sealine so a capable boat, based south coast uk , and a fair amount of money invested in it, so why not use it.

Young children.

I live in Guernsey, when I was about your age/kids about your kids age I had a summer off and I spent 6 weeks in Brittany, A great holiday doing what we wanted.

Weather was not always good but most was, Kids remind me rain wear was macs , shorts and flip flops, kids aged 3 to 7 loved it, so did we.

Suggestion the awkward bit weather wise is UK to Guernsey so bring the boat accross with the mate a week or so in advance many flights UK to CI or Condor Ferries to Poole or on the return leg leave the boat in Guernsey and come back a week or so later to collect.

I would be happy to suggest child friendly marinas and moorings for you.

My kids are now 27 and 21 and they still come on the boat on summer holiday in Normandy and Brittany whenever they can.

Good idea and one for the list for sure. I guess because we use our boat an awful lot round the south coast, staying around the south coast isnt different enough and the vision of weather scuppering ambitions of going further afield is a bit of a worry. I like the idea about doing a delivery run to get the boat somewhere first, easier on the family and more fun for me which are two things that are pretty appealing!

Thanks for your offer of suggesting marinas and moorings, really kind and something that I will no doubt take you up on regardless of the final destination for the 40th.!

If you are thinking charter, may I suggest the BVI's if you want the idylic location or how about the ICW in the states for something a bit more interesting.

Take a look at Cape Coral Florida..... We've been for the past three years and each time we seem to have more fun.

Cape Coral is a water based residential community within easy access to the Gulf of Mexico and the intercoastal waterway.

We hire a typical Floridian villa for a couple of weeks and at the end of the garden we have a boat dock and usually a 150hp 24ft bowrider.

Restaurants, deserted beaches, shops, dolphins, national parks etc are all accessible by boat. Last year we put about 60 hours on the boat.

Back on dry land you have all the discount shopping, tourist attractions and cheap restaurants that anyone could want.

Dont forget August is hurricane season...

Otoh it is a great time of year for a visit to Desolation sound in BC.... Probably the most spectacular boating area in the world... (IMHO). Stay in Vancouver for a day...

Great choice of charter trawlers available at dent rates.. Think £2200 for a week...

Can you post more details?
Any good in late Nov/early Dec or too close to hurricane season?
Any links? (EDIT:- Internet links - not Golf)

Thanks Scadding - Great suggestion, we actually went to Cape Coral a few years back and it was brilliant (I will see if I can dig out some pictures and share them). The fact that we have been already probably removes it from the list just because we want to do something that we havent done before but thanks anyway for suggesting it :)
