Icom repair

'morning folks. I have an Icom hand-held radio about 6 years old which seems to transmit OK but not receive. If anyone knows what might be wrong and the likely cost of repair that would be great. I see from the Icom website that they charge at least £32 for even deigning to provide an estimate for repair, then at least £64 per hour labour plus parts to fix. So this raises the question of whether it might be more sensible just to replace the handheld with a new one. The equivalent model replacement would be about £170, but given the above I'm inclined to go for another manufacture's product. I want something that is reliable, waterproof and preferably ATIS compliant though I have ATIS on the fixed set so not essential. Finally, is there a alternative repairer that anyone knows of that might be more reasonable than Icom? Any observations on the above would be helpful.

I understand your dilemma given the stated costs but from personal experience ICOM UK are excellent at customer service and wouldn't be looking to stuff you on any service costs so if it were me it's a gamble I would take.

Obviously first check that the radio is set to International and not US but a few people (including me) have had actual hardware problems with radios which transmit but don't receive.

Not saying they'll fix it free of charge but I'd be confident that they'd be fair.

It's a known fault that they have been repairing FOC. Give them a call.

Just get it into the post with a note the problem and you phone number.
It will almost certainly reappear about a week later with the problem fixed. FOC..
Icom have been around for years and have backup spairs/repairs reputation second to none.
