Presume you already have GPS? Just 'splice' into that and radio will take position and time from there, no additional antenna needed (except for the actual VHF part of it!)
For what it's worth...my M421 is connected to a Garmin 128 (reasonably cheap to buy) and works fine. Boat next door has his connected to a Standard Horizon 3000i chart plotter with equally good results.
If you are happy with your existing GPS receiver, you could add an aerial/receiver unit just to feed the DSC and any future additions such as a chart plotter. expect to pay about £90 for the Icom one.
