Guess I might be the best one to answer this!!!

They are very simular in size, shape, weight and operation.
They use the same battery pack, AA case and charger.
The major changes are screen size, the loss of the on/off volume control on the M31 and keypad layout.

You are certainly not being ripped off.
They both are fully waterproof and come with 3 year warranty.

M31 will be in good supply as of second week of May.

Hope that all helps.
If you have any further question please drop me a mail or give me a call.

For what it's worth, the M21 used to retail at around £170 until recently. Now there are a few offers around at £140 which is the same as the introductory price of the M31. I've bought the latter but if the prices had been the same when I was looking for one I'd have bought the M21. It is`more compact than the M31.
Make sure you are getting the charger etc with whichever you buy.

Just a quick query for John?

Can I use my M21 standard charger base on the boat with a 12volt DC supply? I was sold a cig lighter type plug with correct size jack plug, but have not yet tried it.

Yes you can charge the M21/31 from 12v using the standard charger base.
Just need a lead.
CP1, CP17, or Cigar.001

Any of these will do the job
