Hi,
I have a ICOM IC M15E handheld radio with a failing battery. Does anyone know if these batteries can still be acquired. I have looked on various sites including ICOM but the battery a CM 138 seems to be discontinued. There was one site (marcucci) that advertised this battery for sale @ 97 euro + vat. At this price it would be a wiser choice to buy a new handhelp radio.
Any thoughts!!!

Hi William

- It's a NiCad pack and it's tired. It's possible to "rejuvenate" it by sticking it in the freezer overnight (yes, no kidding) then leaving it to thaw for 24 hours and then recharging it fully. This will get it to regain @90% of its abilities. I've done this for various NiCad packs and it works. Evidently it wipes the memory effect from which they succumb.

- It's not difficult to dismantle the battary pack and replace the cells with new ones. You can get new ones - possibly with a higer capacity from Maplins or RS Components. I've had to do that with an ICOM H/H which new battery packs were unavailable or horrendously expensive.

Third thought.

There are people who will rebuild the battery pack with new cells for you. I cannot remember any sites, but someone will be along who can tell you. Or you can google for it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

William ... They are available on e-bay if you do a search. I got a brand new one for £16. Can't find my reference at the moment but will let you know.

I have an Icom 3 with six rechargeable AA batteries. After several inconvenient rundowns, I diched the rechargeables and installed AA Duracell - perfect for my occasional needs and replenished from on board stocks in just 30 secs when needed!
