We are just finishing up the refastening of a 1950s West Coast Vancouver Island mission boat. In these parts the traditional, the preferred, and still the best underlayment behind the ice planking is tar impregnated "Irish felt" or sometimes called "Irish flax". This was always imported to North America and distributed through both roofing and maritime suppliers. Well, the importers have stopped importing, and those of us with ice planks in hand are left standing still. Can someone kindly advise me what the source of this material is in Europe, so that we can get the flow restarted again to the traditional boatbuilding and repair crews in North America? Thanks in advance!
