Ice flows

One of my sailing friends in the USA lives along the St Claire River in Michigan

his house backs onto the river and through the summer he keeps the boat at the end of his garden

but in the winter the river freezes up with just a narrow channel kept clear by the ice breakers

the river has now started moving again - because it is the first sign of spring

he went out into his garden and shot this mesmerising little film - he says that you can feel the ice rumbling against the steel piling.

but he says that he would love to have tides -

he says that it must be amazing to have a river that flows in both directions

I can well imagine: that's why they call it Breakup. FWIW, I actually drove over an ice bridge today - a mile over a very large river. It was a very unsettling experience.
