Have you seen the RYA ICC renewal document, I think they have gone completely bonkers. The form lists all your current qualifications and then requests you to send in proof of eligibility. Well it is there RYA who sets the tests, the certificates are sent to the RYA who add then adds them to your ICC so they have already received all this information so why do they want it again? It gets worse, they also want copies of passports!

I really don't understand why they are asking for information they have already verified in the past and clearly they already hold the information they as asking us to provide, it is quite bizarre.

I'm confused, as your post doesn't seem to bear much relationship to the form I googled: http://www.rya.org.uk/SiteCollectio...Documents/Boating Abroad/ICC Renewal Form.pdf. In particular, it doesn't "
  • all your current qualifications".

Is this the same as what you received, or are they now sending out different ones and have forgotten to update their web site?

That form is not exactly a model of clarity as to what's required, but I'm pretty sure that all it asks you to prove is your nationality. This is because the UK is not allowed to issue ICCs to people from countries that have their own schemes - otherwise the French would be coming over here to take our much easier test and side-step their own national rules. It sounds like they didn't check this very carefully in the past, so they can't rely on the fact that you got a certificate last time round, hence have to ask for proof of nationality again. It's only a photocopy of your passport, hardly an onerous requirement. You don't need to provide copies of your certificates again - you only need to provide any new ones that you want adding (for example, if you were a motorboatalist who has now learned to sail, or you've done a CEVNI.

Are you a member? I used to hold various certs and these easiest way to re-validate them was to Join the RYA.

Re-validation without membership as you say with proof of hours etc, with membership its in the post..

It is very similar but it is all pre-compleated but pif you look at the form it says in big bold letters:-

****IMPORTANT - Following changes to the eligibility criteria, proof of eligibility is now required from every applicant. The requirements are detailed on the renewal form overleaf in section 1. ****

In all the years I've had one, no-one but no-one has ever asked to see it. 'Nice little earner' that provides someone in Hamble Towers with a full in-tray each and every morning.....

Yes, and if you turn the form over and actually read Section 1 as that notice suggests, you will find that it is all about nationality, not certificates.

You have to be a British Resident, a British National, or from somewhere that doesn't issue its own ICCs. That's what they mean by "eligibility".

I would mutter something about "don't they teach people to read in school these days?", but you're probably older than me :p :)
