I am new to this forum and hope that all can help me locate traditional boat builders/users in Spain and Portugal. My family and I are from the US. Specifically, Chicago, Illinois. We sail alot in the Great Lakes and are lucky enough to travel. We are planning on going to Spain and Portugal late March/early April and I would like to visit local boatyards, sailors and people still using tradtional craft even if it is for leisure only. I know the coast of Portugal north of Lisboa and continuing on to the Biscay Bay is the general location of this activity but would still like suggestions from any of you who can help. Thank you for any help you can give!

Juan Sanchez of Astilleros Mediterraneo in Malaga might be a possibility if you're in at all interested in the traditional yachting rather than work/fishing boat end of things. There's an article about his own Fife cutter that he restored in this month's Classic Boat. The yard can be contacted on 0034 (0) 952 346 389 or email astimed@terra.es Don't think they speak a lot of English though...

I would be very interested in seeing the yards you describe. We are arriving in Lisboa next Thursday and plan on visiting some of Portugal before traveling north into Spain. Please let me know how we can meet. Also, please accept my family's profound sympathies for the bombings last week in Madrid.
