Don't know about Ian Nicholson, but if you want an alternative quote try Paul Jeffes. He's quite close to you, in Largs. I had him look at a 36ft a few weeks ago and was quick and thorough.

[/ QUOTE ]I would second that - Paul Jeffes has done a number of boats for me - always been thorough and prompt and not too hard to pay

Ian Nicholson's work is the standard by which I judge other surveyors. He is very knowledgeable, and very, very thorough. No hesitation in recommending him, particularly if you are buying.
Get references. Has he got professional indemnity insurance. How much experience has he of the type of boat you want him to survey. Does he belong to surveyors professional body. See if he gets upset when you ask for the bpreceding - a good one doesn't. After all what's to hide? YOU are employing him.
Ian Nicolson (unless you're referring to a double) has written a number of books on boat surveying and design tips and is probably the doyen of the profession.
I've never used him personally but I've certainly used his books for reference.
'Tis rather like asking if Dame Ellen is any good at single-handed sailing.
Boat surveys are charged on a formula depending on boat length - so all quotes should be the same, perhaps plus travelling expenses. I've used Paul Jeffes and found him fine and prompt.
I have paid a similar ammount for a survey of a similar sized boat. The boat appeared to be in good order and everything looked fine in my view, there were of course a few things that I had noticed that the surveyor of course picked up on as well. However he also noted some serious design issues. Based on these problems and his advice I pulled out of the sale. I would have ended up with an expensive lemon if I had not paid for the survey.
Depends on where the boat was (travelling time/mileage) maybe past experience with the marina crew delaying lifts etc, what type of survey you wanted. Purchase, insurance etc., etc.
Have you ever dealt with the man before? repeat business and all that. Personally while Paul Jeffes keeps his fees in line I will not use anyone else. I prefer "the devil I know over the devil I don't"

I came across Ian's book on surveying small craft just before I went to look at my first choice of boat. His book enabled me to identify 7 separate issues each one sufficient to render the boat unseaworthy.
On the way home from that trip I called into a marina and had the opinion expressed by marina staff that Ian was a difficult surveyor to deal with. That sounded like a reccommendation to me and I used him to survey the boat I eventually bought.
I'd use him again.
