Excellent film exactly how sailing is for most of us. We make do with what we've got and just enjoy the best we can.
Stop with the value skim milk and go with Coffee mate. Add two x teaspoons to your coffee, add a bit of water mix to a paste and voila no smegma in your brew. It's a bit more for the Coffee mate but its worth it before/during and after a sail.
As for starting. My Volvo Penta 2002 sounded exactly the same when starting for an entire season lots of prayers and promises were given in order to coax it to start. It was getting slower and slower so much so it occasionally wouldn't turn over at all. Turned out to be my starter motor needed a refurb.
