I went for a sail yesterday and...

...I ended up making a slightly tongue in cheek movie about it.

Can anyone shed any light on;
1. Why my engine takes so long to start from cold - even with the cold start button pressed - Volvo MD1B.
2. What's wrong with my mainsail leach/roach - it's apparently only a few years old. I thought the battens may be too short and am trying to deny the possibility that it may be old and worn.
3. How you stop powdered milk going lumpy in coffee.

New boat perhaps?

Mainsail not pulled up enough.
Jib looks not to be rolled out completely too.

I assume you know about all the other stuff that is wrong.

1) Dunno - turning over slower?
2) Dunno - could have got a bit stretched. Might help to increase the halyard tension a little, outhaul and kicker. Not sure in what combination as it depends on wind strength what works best.
3) It always goes lumpy in near boiling water, mix it in cold first at around double strength and add to the cup like real milk. I also find it helps when using it as a reserve supply at home to mix some real milk (even semi-skimmed) into the mix and leave in the fridge for a little while. Stops it looking and behaving like skimmed.

Yea the main wasn't hauled fully, but have the same leach issue when it is hauled tight. The gib wasn't completely unfurled because at the moment the boat suffers bad leehelm due, I think to the mast being raked at a forward angle. So a bit less jib helps reduce the leehelm. Havn't had the boat for long so I have yet to fix all these things :)

Air leak in the fuel line. Lets fuel run back to the tank.

Not enough luff tension. With the sheet free and head to wind, wind it up until a vertical crease appears parallel to the mast.

If it's not lumpy from the tin, drop it onto the surface of the coffee. Don't stir it until it's all wet.

Brilliant!

This is what makes me glad to be British!

How refreshing!

Thanks for sharing your day with us.

Tony.

Most important first.

MILK
I always use powered milk... at home as well as on the boat.

Essential that the powder is kept dry. Transfer to a container with an air tight lid.

Dont add to boiling or near boiling water... let it cool for 30 seconds or so.

Dont use anything other than MARVEL. Seldom any problems with that going lumpy.

Engine

As suggested could be due to fuel draining back.

Cranking speed is too low IMHO. Check battery and all connections including the negative retrun.

Also check that the cold start device is actually latching in and not releasing prematurely. I beleive the latching mechanism can become worn.

Whats the compression like?

Sails

Dont know ... would have to play ... ceratinly tighten the mainsail luff properly.

Maybe experiment with the main sheet traveller position, if its on a traveller

Autohelm

My best and most useful bit of ancillary equipment.

luved it

Me an H loved your film, made us both chuckle on this cold night.i can help with the engine but dont know much about the other stuff.

A Diesel engine needs heat to work, so on cold days like these esp if the engine is a bit worn the heat generated to start the thing just gets dispelled around the cold steel of the head, all you need to do is introduce heat. on my old Volvo i used to use a blowlamp up the air intake whilst turning the engine over, started in seconds even on the coldest of days, some peps used lighted rags up the intake, bit dangerous i know but a fridge could fall on your head ashore.:)

Mainsail needs at least one slide at the head, with better luff tension (can the gooseneck move?) either by halyard tension or sweating down the gooseneck the shape should be a lot better.

Mix powdered milk with a drop of cold water before adding coffee and hot water.

Engine - make sure the glow plugs are actually working

The battens do look too short. The sail has no body. It's like a bedsheet. I bet it's older than you think.
The fact it forms a crease from the luff down past the ends of the battens makes me wonder if you have too much mast bend and the tip of the mast is too far back? Maybe slackening the forward lowers and tightening the aft lowers would take some of the bend from the middle.
Your kicking strap looks a bit floppy as well.

But really the sail looks nearly as bad as the one I replaced on my boat

My old MD1b always responded best if I spun it up with the decompressor activated. Then when it's running at a sensible rpm, drop the decompressor lever and off she goes. Of course it's always easier if you can reach it and the start button at the same time. This is why mine is beside the engine. It works on my current engine too, but nor=t so well as it has no "cold start" button.
