I wasn\'t aware there was a speed limit!

Just reading YBW.COM Newsletter. They state that there is likely to be huge fines for boat owners in an effort to stop the coasts eroding away! Cameras will be watching our coast lines and will be trying to catch any skipper who is thought to be going to fast!

This must be an April fool trick surely?
I cannot think any boat wash is going to do damage to the coast lines in the same way as the waves smashing against the shores?

Anybody know more about this scheme? Good grief what is this country coming to?

Actually it isn't as daft as it sounds. Some local authorities do indeed have a speed limit within 'X' yards of their shorelines.

Indeed, such as within the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth for example.

I believe there's a 10 knot speed limit within 500 yards of any Hampshire coastline. I can't be sure of that though.

The Dockyard Port of Portsmouth Order 2005

Speed of Vessels navigating the Dockyard Port

8.(1) All vessels shall comply with any direction which the Queen's Harbour Master may issue for speed limits from time to time and which may be published in a general or local notice to mariners.
(2) Subject to paragraph (1) above, no vessel, when navigating within the Harbour or (except for water-skiers and jet-skiers in an area for the time being designated by the Queen's Harbour Master and marked by buoys) when within 0.5 nautical miles of the line of mean low-water springs in any part of the Dockyard Port outside the Harbour shall proceed at a greater speed than 10 knots through the water save for the purpose and subject to the conditions specified in a licence in writing given by the Queen's Harbour Master.

Portsmouth Dockyard covers some of the Hampshire coast and not just the harbour, so perhaps my answer was a bit fuller than your link.

Most of the rest of the Hampshire coastline is covered by Southampton VTS, who have similar limits. Perhaps you can find the link to that one too. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Coastal speed limits often apply off bathing beaches and round our way are intended to stop waterskiers, PWCs etc mixing with swimmers. Wittering, Bracklesham and Bognor all have speed limits and exclusion zones inshore for the safety of swimmers.

I've posted the info on Eastern Solent restrictions many times in years gone by, but have never come across a blanket speed ban on whole of Hamps coastline, and cannot find any reference, though as others have said, there are local restrictions

VTS Southamptom don't have the same blanket control that QHM Portsmouth does

There is a speed limit and minimum separation distance for boats up to a certain distance off the Pwllheli coast. I forget the details but I think its a local byelaw. I can look up the details if you are interested.

Yes, you are right Roy. I think those yellow and blue marker buoys to east and west of the Pwllheli fairway denote that limit - and I don't breach it anyway coz its not safe to do so. Its just that web picture along with black crosses looked suspect, especially with a date of April 1st on it.

If you read the text carefully you'll find an official with the surname of 'Langsam' - that's slow in German! Also, the advocate for speeding was a Mr S. D Gonzalez - go figure!
