Very unusual design, but also very well thought out.
Well known boat, been around for a while - in fact since 1998 according to the video. The original owners had the view that speed was an important safety factor, which makes a lot of sense.
Went on to create a whole range of aluminium explorer power yachts when they sold this sailing boat.

Dashew is highly respected in America.

If you Google 'Steve Dashew' you will generate a number of links to him, his background and his expedition motor yachts (which I think were built in NZ).

I believe it was Dashew who lead the use of HT anchor chain of a size smaller than recommended.

Reading between the lines Dashew recognised the benefits of the smaller galvanised anchor chain and persuaded a chain maker, ACCO?, to galvanise some Q&T G70 (which is a transport chain, securing logs, (tree trunks) to trucks). It is sold as 'galvanised G70' but does not actually meet ungalvanised G70 specifications. It met Dashew's needs and no-one wants to spoil a good story. I agree with the HT smaller chain philosophy but disagree with Dashew's other recommendation to use some of the weight saved in down sizing the chain by investing in a bigger anchor. I agree with Vyv's article and down sizing chain and maintaining the recommended anchor size seemed to work for us - but you cannot make the most of the changes unless you also accept the need for a snubber.

Today you can still buy 'galvanised G70' made in America from Peerless (America's biggest chain maker now owned by Kito of Japan), who bought ACCO. They make to both an Imperial and Metric specification. After the demise of Maggi you can still buy a true G70 from Italy and Gunnebo make a galvanised 'sort of' G80. (Its made for the aqua culture industry to metric sizes but from a wire 10% bigger than metric specification - and I don't know if it fits a metric gypsy). Spencer Inc in New Jersey also make a galvanised HT chain (G100 spec?) for the US armed forces, Navy and Marines.

I think Starzinger was also a proponent of 'smaller' HT chain again American 'galvanised G70'

So thanks to Steve Dashew for starting the changes and engendering an enduring debate.
