Everytime, we go out over Chichester Bar, about 40M north of the Bar beacon our Echosounder goes berserk and reads stupid depths like 500M this carries on until we are just south of West Pole. As soon as we are just past West Pole everything works normally.
This happens EVERTIME, going out and coming in at the same place.
Any ideas why this happens?

could be aerated water, try going over at slack water and see if there is a difference?

This is only a guess, but I know manufactures all warn against putting the transducer in the prop wash

Perhaps it is a UUO (an unidentified underwater object), unless of course it flies underwater /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

There is a huge abyss at the entrance to Chichester 500m deep. Stories about a bar are just made up by locals to deter visitors to their harbour.

It's something to do with stratification of water at different temperature/salinity/oxygen levels. In locks in Holland we often see similar effects. Depth will initially be something like 3 metres. As the lock either fills or empties the displayed depth will jump up to about 30 metres and down to 0, apparently at random. We sometimes see the same phenomenon as we approach locks that are emptying towards us, especially if it is fresh water discharging to the sea. Somehow the signal is reflected off certain layers within the water before returning to the transducer.
