I know that it's probably old hat to many of you, but I actually saw a dolphin/porpoise last week.

Coming out of Portsmouth on our way to Brighton and heading for the gap my No 1 son who was on the helm yells out "there's something in the water in front of us - and I'm going to hit it".

He was right, but rather than "hitting it" - it jumped out of the water just feet in front of us. And that was all we saw.

It was the closest I had seen one in this country, despite many years boating, but it was too close to positively identify from its rear end.

Made my day. ( i.e. easily satisfied )

Fantastic, good on you! On the way down thro the Med to Malta, late winter , we met a school? of Dolpins who stayed with us for miles! Bad weather too ! But they actually seemed to enjoy rubbing themselves and banging against the hull and you could feel them doing it on a 40' Flybridge boat! Not many other boats of any type seen for 9 days! Also they were unbelievably ' quick'.
Guess there was a reason, but welcome distraction at the time. Good luck with future sightings. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We're lucky to be blessed with an abundance of Dolphins on the Shannon Estuary and the SW coast. Very playful and visitors on board are nearly always well entertained by them. Good piece on them in last nights BBC2 Coast programme (ie down our neck of the woods)

There is a very small group which have taken up residence just down stream of
Costa del Gravesend.
Appeared to consist of two adults and a very small baby.

Saw one this afternoon just outside Portsmouth while I was out with Haven't a Clue. Came up right alongside us.

Seen lots in the Med, but this was the first time in the Solent.

Four weeks ago an adult and cub (right term?) were spotted several days in a row off Southampton Container terminal near the entrance to Eeling Creek.

Yep, as LAMBADA says, they are seen quite often up ere.
However earlier this Year , I was privedged to see loads.
Leaping and frolicking or whatever the correct phrase is, and so near the boat.
Twas better than Disney World!
They were leaping and performing as well as chasing the boat and it's wake.
Seemed like they were having a right good time.
Seen them before but this time they were "all around" and more active than usual.
Not Harbour Porpoises (which appear quieter and just surface and dive again) but Dolphins with a Capital D.
Don't know me Dolphins/ Porpoises.
Just know they are both a sight to behold.
Anyway good spot Pete, I bet you can't wait to see some more!

Saw an extremely rare pink dolphin under the Tsing Ma bridge a few months ago. Surprised they can still live in the wash-off of the Pearl River.

Was well chuffed to see it tho. 1st one for me in nearly 19 years.
