Having finally succumbed and bought an iphone 5 which is the best app for tide heights and times?

This is also posted on Motor boat forum.

I am less interested in tidal flows more predicting tide heights and times of certain heights ie clearance at certain dates in the future more than 7 days ie for a 12 month period, I am happy to pay for this.

Marine tides planner by Tucabo. Use in app purchases to get extra stuff. Currents, tidal flows as well as tides for just about anywhere. Excellent App.

I used to use this and very good it was, but have been unable to buy permission to access future data. Something slightly flakey about the in-app purchase process. Notified Tucabo, but it never responded.

Same here - best tides app I have found. Quick, easy and clear to use IMO.

Don't they all get their data from the same (unreliable / out of date) tide files? Probably worth checking if they have free versions and comparing accuracy with something like the UKHO website...

I the case of Tucabo..
"Predictions are based on the harmonic method, using constants from the Hydro offices (UKHO, SHOM, NOAA, BOM, CHS etc). There are differences between the app predictions and the official Hydro office tide tables, as these are based on large numbers of constants that are not made publicly available. The Hydro offices consider the harmonic methods used in this product appropriate for navigation"

From what I read (here: http://www.flaterco.com/xtide/faq.html#60) any official harmonics files are as rare as hen's teeth - thanks largely to the UKHO.

Looks like the US one's may be kept up to date but the rest aren't - and I assume this is what most of these apps use for their harmonic files.

Not sure if this helps the OP. I guess my point is questioning whether any or suitable for navigation (or even planning a beach trip!)

The "clock" bottom right of the tide curve needs to be unlocked to allow the app to auto update every 5 minutes, just tap on it.
I used to use Belfields tide prog for pocket PC and I bought a device to permanently display on the boat. It was very good and constantly updated the tide curve. He stopped supporting pocket PC so I bought an iPad mini which is mounted below just to show the Tucabo app which after some prompting by me now updates every 5 minutes. The app works on the iPhone iPad and mini. Compared to the price of boat instruments, an iPad mini is cheap!

The Flaterco Harmonic data is taken from the Harmonic Data provided in the UK by the Proudman Institute(University of Liverpool) and is based on ongoing tidal data from their tide stations around the UK.The same Data source is used in those pocket UK wide tide tables and I suspect in the independant Almanacs.
Although calculated by David Flater(Flaterco) their resulting tidal predictions compares very favourably with those predictions on the Admiraltys Easytide.
Flaterco harmonic predictions are used by the free prediction programme World Tides
www.mdr.co.nz
Also in the World Tides Ap for Android Tide Predictions-I assume there is also a free i phone version.
I have been using and monitoring these predictions for over 10 years here in NW Scotland and at most vary in time by several minutes and height in several cms!
Bear in mind that harmonic prediction programmes are based on observed recorded data at the tide stations-how high is the tide each day and at what time recorded over a period of decades perhaps centuries plus the variables of air pressure weather conditions etc.

I have used Ayetides for years and love it.

I can also recommend its stable mate on a Mac 'Mr Tides'. This includes the ability to set a depth line for any place so you can see at what times you can i.e. enter/leave/float off/dry out, etc. and an anchor aid. Having previously entered boat details, enter the present depth from the sounder and it will advise on depth at low tide and high water and the rode length required at chosen rode to depth rations.
