Now entering my 5th year of boating. I've done cross channel etc but other then the VHF course/exam I've never had any formal training.

Last year we were in St Malo and I didn't want to risk going up the Rance as I believe you have to have some sort of qualifiaction recognised by the French if you intend to go up river.

Question is, how can I get a quick certification? I really don't want to have to spend 2 days learning about boat handling techniques, anchoring etc.

Thanks for that Julie.

Looks like I need to get the RYA to give me a test to get the ICC and then also pass the CEVNI exam.

Could you recommend somewhere? Ideally I'd like to do it asap before my boat goes back in.

I need some easy qualifications too. Can never remember all the silly lights on different boats, so need an exam without them. Dont know how we would go on on the roads if every one had different light. We would not know whether they were coming or going!! Anyway it dont seem to matter on the road, whether it's a tractor coming towards you or a 10 ton truck. Why the hell does it on the sea!! Theres loads of other stuff that I cant remember from Crap Skipper that I did years ago, never needed it anyway. So all that cant be included. I want a realy simple test. Maybe one that I can do over the phone. All seems to be a bit of a noncence anyway. If we can survive long enough to get to france, we can make it up there poxy river!! All ready been up there rivers anyway and there no more complicated than ours. It does seem a bit daft having a test after zooming about for fifteen years!!

Tell me about it! I had to do it a couple of years ago to go to Paris. A silly little book and a multiple choice test.
