Ive been told its a johnson 40 hp 1980s ex-military outboard any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks (if photos dont show ill try again to upload them)
If it exMOD, then it will either be knackered or very good. I am slightly surprised that you have just got it, as most MOD stuff is sold off before it reaches 30 years old ! Are you in fact the first owner since its release ?
It was given to me a couple of years ago for my 24ft sail boat, but its too powerful for mine. I don't know for sure if it's ex-mod, but was told it could be because of the prop and the repaint. I am pretty good at mechanical DIY, I don't have any manuals, haven't looked yet for serial numbers etc. I am trying to find out more detail about it as I am selling it.
Originally it would have been on a plate on the port transom clamp and also on a core plug on the engine block.
Armed with that it should be possible to id the year with certainty and then access exploded parts diagrams and parts lists and obtain manuals
It could be a commercial model, or one produced as a military model, as I cannot find a 1980 40 hp listed s a recreational model.
If you cannot find a model number it would be worth taking some decent photos and submitting them to the experts on the Johnson Evinrude forum at http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24
