The good and the bad news are that I have two pulleys facing upwards at the top of the main mast with the lines running over them so no threading down the mast.
If the line had been inside the mast as it was fastened off at one end it would just have flapped around in the 120 mph wind!
The biggest worry for me will be climbing the mast relying on the spinnaker hailyard which whilst sturdy runs through a pulley attached to the mast head with a sturdy shackle-although as I recall the pulley is one reinforced with stainless pads running up the sides of the pulley from the pulley bearings up to the shackle. I am just not sure how good the pulley will be at holding my 12.5 stones!! as I jumar my way up the mast with my Petzls.
The way forward will of course be to use the topping lift which is 12 mm nylon as a safety line.
Finally as I write this I am wondering why a previous owner abandoned using one of the masthead pulleys for either the topping lift or the spinnaker?
Something to be said for a continuous line maybe?
