I hope your\'e right about Lanolin

Well I have read so many positive things about it I thought I would give it a try. It's cost me 11 quid from Boots and up to now I have always used Nautix but Pro Boat has stopped selling the stuff so now is as good a time as any.

It will work, don't worry heat it on and polish it.

Re: I hope your\'e right about Lanolin

The advice I was given was to polish the prop to a high standard before applying
the Lanolin, In my instance the prop was a new one so this was not a great hardship,
but on a older prop a lot of elbow grease would be required to bring it up good enough.
And not to use a abrasive as the resulting scratches would have to be polished out!
Also paid £11ish for mine.

Used it to grease the Blakes seacocks for the heads,
with great success usually they start dripping after a bit of use, but so far not a sign of a drip
and they have had a lot of use in the last month!
Mind you, they are a little bit heavier to turn on and off, but no hardship!

I hope that everyone is right too, as I have bought a pot and intend to try it this year. Have wet and dried my prop and polished it, surely doesn't need to be that shiney ???

Re: I hope your\'e right about Lanolin

we use it at work on a 2 metre variable pitch prop. wire brush polish heat and apply! seems to last ok in these tropical ? tropical waters of new zealand. on the bow thruster whch is a high speed prop we use a teflon coating, props sent away to have it baked on. that seems to be even better, but more expensive.

I saw fishermen in New Zealand using it and swearing by it. They simply basted the prop in lanolin, put it in a plastic bag and left it in the sun for a few days. They claimed it worked...

Elenya - what rpm do you run your props at? Will Teflon or lanolin stay on at 3000-4000 rpm? I've just spent a couple hours in the water cleaning my props which were antifouled w/paint, but most of it has come off.

What is the consitiency of the "real" stuff. Got a jar called Lanolene from OZ which is pretty soft. Everybody talks about heating the prop. So I did but then the stuff melted away in no time. No way to polish either since I would just rub it off completely. Do I have the real stuff.

If your props run at 3-4 grand, nothing is going to stay on! Lanolin would have a chance, but I doubt any antifoul would stay on, even hard racing.

The lanoline stuff I have is pretty soft. Since everyone talks about needind to heat up the propeller to apply ti I wonder whether I have the right stuff. On a warm prop it just dripps off :((. What am I doing wrong here?

Polish the prop prior to applying the lanolin, wants a really good polish,
then put the lanolin on the prop , give it plenty, then apply gentle heat ,
lanolin turns clear excess drips off, thats how i did mine.
