.............about rudeness at the show, but can you imagine how dull it must be talking to "tyre kickers" all day who really aren't serious buyers and just take up a bag of time - and time is money! There is a balance to be struck I'm sure, but I wouldn't fancy spending ten days at the show talking to folk who were wasting time. The real talent is in picking out the folk who are in the marketplace - and you can never judge a book by it's cover..............and the punter has as much responsibility to make it clear to the sales folk that they either are or are not in the marketplace to ensure a happy experience. I've said to guys in the past "I'm not gonna buy but can I have a look" and have been treated to a tour - but I can equally understand that if they've got a buying punter on the stand that they want to talk to them as a priority over me. If I said that I was in the marketplace and was the ignored........well that's another matter!

Tyre kicker one day then his folks suddenly snuff it leaving him the family goods and he is now a buyer in the top end of the market.

No one is a time waster really cos you let the guy on the boat he maybe cant afford today and be nice to him so he tells te freinds who tell ten freinds who tell etc etc.

Free advertising in a 10 min discussion is better than spending thousands in a mag (sorry Kim Hugo, Jake). No one is really a tyre kicker thay are walking billboards but you just have to do the ciorrect presentation.

Not really to do with this boat show but to do with buying a boat and rudeness.
I was in the market for a new boat that I was wanting built to order. Cost in the order of £250.000. I went to Seaward Marine, Aquastar, Bucklers Hard and finally Dale. I purchased a Seaward 35 because they were the only yard that did not ignore my request for details and prices - Dale unfortunately for them sent them to A.N.Other. For full details see M.B.M. "Mailbag" March 2001 and for the replies that were offered from the people who ignored me but did not like the publicity see M.B.M. "Mailbag" May 2001
I agree it is hard standing for 8 hours a day for 10 days doing promotional shows - I know I've done it myself - but at the end of the day that's where your trade comes from and how ultimately you buy your dream boat. If anyone of my staff were noted as being rude to potential customers then they would not be my staff for much longer if indeed they actually managed to finish the show.

It costs nothing to be polite and friendly, they shouldn't be doing the job if they can't even manage that!

Being paid to talk boats all day, what could be better?!

I am in the car audio business which attracts many young tyre kickers. I always try to be helpfull and polite even when I do not feel so. Iast week I sold a £1,400 in dash DVD to a young bloke who just purchased his 1996 cleo for £400.
Lesson 1, always greet your customers with a smile. If your salesman finds that difficult then he would be better else where.
Last year I was poorly treated by the Princess rep. It darkened an otherwise great day so I won't be visiting Princess boats this year.
