and am so excited! I didnt technically buy it myself - my partner and I have bought it together but I chose it and the spec so it still feels great!

So in May we take delivery of a new Ben First 27.7. {Perfect for us to race round the cans on (we ordered North 3DL sails) and also good enough for a cruise to Yarmouth or Lymington with friends if we fancy too.

So am a very happy bunny. What advice do the forumites suggest for a first time boat owner?

Find an understanding bank manager ;-)

Only joking. Congratulations on becoming a boat owner, I'm sure you'll have great fun.

Happy sailing.

Re: Looking out for you.

To start with the boat will be at Port Hamble and then possible moving over to Cowes depending on circumstances and such like.

As far as a name goes we havent a clue at the moment! Ideas gratefully received!!

Re: Looking out for you.

I'll take any cast off name ideas! That is turning out to be one of the most difficult areas! Signing huge amounts of money is easy by comparison.

The most difficult area of all is proving to be insurance - if the bluewater crowd think it's difficult just try getting cover for a race boat!

Great choice of boat and sails, we went to Amsterdam to see the prototype and very nearly bought one but ended up with a new 31.7 for not much more.

Things to do/look out for.

1 Make sure that the commissioning dealer primes the hull properly before antifouling, if you are having a racing antifoul get it specced now.

2 Is an oven an option, if so consider it.

3 On delivery, get a list of any snags and put it in writing to the dealer, keep on top of them.

4 If the boat is blue hulled, consider fender sox, also the standard fenders on Beneteaus are generally too small for a good blow and can get pushed under/over the pontoon finger.

5 Get all your safety kit as you start out, possibly a discount from dealer on a job lot

6 If you are having jackstays get em fitted at commissioning.

7 Make sure all your electric bits on the mast and windex are fitted at comm.

8 ask em if they will leave mouse lines in the spare holes in the mast.

9 Make sure the saildrive leg is antifouled with the correct type of antifoul, it is different from the norm, can't remember the name. My dealer said 'it doesnt't need doing' but after 6 months was covered in barnies.

If I think of any more will pm

Good luck.

Re: I have bought my first joint floating asset!!

Without being too gloomy, but being realistic about what racing can do for relationships, and bearing in mind your joint contribution to buying this vundervessel you might like to have the delivery and receipt papers and the registration made out in both names. What have you got to loose?

Ouch - how could I be so negative! My grey hairs screetch realistic!

But good sailing in the meanwhile!

Re: Looking out for you.

Thanks!

We've got Alchemist and Wraith as on the list so far.

Singularity has been suggested (where the normal laws of physics are suspended).

The Americans still favour the project name (now rather dated) of Schock and Awe

Re: Looking out for you.

When we first got ours I wanted to name her "Red Dwarf" (after the TV series - also a small star).
This gets thrown back into my face quite often of late - Mrs Yanita: "If you wanted to name her after a star, "Black Hole" now seems more apt".
