I have an idea for a different drive system suitable for displacement to high performance hulls and unlike the IPS able to take the ground if necessary. The idea is very sound but needs someone with engineering knowledge to sort the "rough edges" and fine tune it. Do I (would you ?)
a. Just approach an engineering firm
b. approach Mercruiser
c. approach Bombardier
d. somebody like Sternpwr (my particular favourite, as their drives seem to be very well engineered)
Also is it possible to take out a patent based on drawings alone,or, do you have to have a working model?
Any views welcome

You can take out a patent on drawings, you do not require a working model.
Your pataent gets examined to see if is truly a new idea and makes sense.
However I would stringly advise that you consult a qualified patent agent.
