i have a friend

who has one of those plastic boats
in order to stop him breaking his new rudder at sea and endangering his long suffering family
can anyone suggest a way he can avoid using it
i thought he could stream empty pot noodle pots from either side of the stern to create a drag to turn the boat
any other ideas?

He could fit two outboard brackets on the transom, and thus steer under power without the need for a rudder. I believe another forum member may have a quantity of tropical hardwood that could be used to fabricate these brackets.

i have only seen him use an outboard once
it refused to start on the return trip and as i recall he had forgotten the oars

Hmm. He needs something that he can tow behind the boat to create variable resistance - which could perhaps be achieved by using some kind of hollow container with a valve and an inlet/outlet, that could be opened and closed to fill and empty the container, thus varying the drag to alter the direction of the boat.

Something like a holding tank would be ideal: I wonder if your friend has one hidden away somewhere?

Tropical hardwood bulletin.

Tropical hardwood all gone, mostly in small chisel sized pieces. Bruising healing nicely.

But here's a thing. When I was skipping my bitsnpieces, yard skip was full of big bits of timber. Some nice marina company had been resurfacing a pontoon and just cut off the old planking and dumped it. Teak planks!. As much as poss came home in the boot of the car. I hope it'll clean up and plane down nicely.

No. I checked again 3 days later and the skip had been emptied, either officially or unofficially. Not just timber, everything.

I've also heard that Fray Bentos pie tins make excellent drogues. I believe that there is someone here is somewhat of an expert in them - but perhaps he is too engrossed in deck planking at the moment.

Deck planking no longer my problem. It's being replaced with a damp-proof membrane and then shipped off to an ovreseas (IOW) yard for replanking.
