Anchoring off Eigg today, anchor wouldn't dig in.

On raising it, this is what we found.

A large rock wedged in the anchor!

It took a hammer and "Crocodile Dundee" size screwdriver to chip it loose and then get a rope under it to lift out of the anchor.

A first for me!

Guess what make of anchor it is. 🤪

It says Rocna on it which is a bit of a give away. No roll bar so it is a Rocna Vulcan.
They are supposed to dig in, in any substrate.

You should send it back and ask for your money back

Oh, duh - I was focussed on the lump of granite (at the time and when posting).

Go to the top of the class.

This is from Rocna...
Rocna does not recommend swivels, as they can be a weak point, are generally not necessary, and for the Vulcan in particular can add too much weight to the end of the shank, impacting setting performance. Don't drag the anchor while trying to set it.

Interesting regarding swivels, thanks.

I don't drag it while setting (my technique matches their recommendation).

Should also be a few links of chain between swivel and anchor to stop the swivel being bent open.
If you search vyv_cox on here he has links to his website with information.

I'm still trying to work out from the pic what anchor and how it was wedged???

As to swivels, ditched ours 10 years ago and never an issue now.

Right - this thread is about the rock, not swivels. No more discussion on swivels!

It's a 20kg Rocna Vulcan. No bloody idea how it wedged - must have been early in the set procedure. Anchor never set at all. Just fluke (pun intended).

We used swivel on a Rocna for more years then I can remember , as you say you need a few links of chain between the two .
