My Christmas requests included the PBO Almanac and a battery powered soldering iron. Got both. The soldering iron works off 3 AA batteries and having tested it, it's absolutely ideal for small electrical and electronic jobs. Melts solder well and will be ideal for replacing a couple of fuse holders on my switch panel which are soldered on to a common supply. Often 'gadgets' don't live up to what they seem to promise. This one does. And it's not expensive to add to your onboard tool kit.

runs for an hour continuously on 3 x AA batteries. takes 15 seconds to get hot enough to solder so if you allow a minute per joint (and that's a lot!) that's 60 soldered joints for the price of three batteries. cools down in 30 seconds so quick and easy to use. use will be so infrequent that cost is hardy an issue - it's the ease and convenience of having it.

Presents to me from SWHBO. A pair of dinghy wheels as she is tired of helping lift the inflatable dinghy up beaches and a Kannard EPIRB-so that she does not have to wait 7 years when I go missing off the boat-no self interest there then!

Nothing at all - no presents, no cards.

I got a Fridge, a Nasa BM1 so I know how much the Fridge is killing the battery, New first Aid kit, some nice teak racks for things like glasses, some decent new tools and tool bag/box and a sun hat. Clearly having missed a lovely summer sailing this year the sun hat will be a waste of time for years to come!

I also bought myself a new grab bag and lifejacket bag because they look tidy. Mrs Y wrapped them up for me!

The children also bought me a nice little brass plaque with the boat's call sign and MMSI number on it to put at the Nav Station - a nice little touch.

All in all not bad.
