I finally left the harbour.

with all the encourgement i got from you good people i decided to leave chi harbour for the first time on friday.

superb hot and calm day and went out to west pole and then 2 miles further and my little shetland 498 and her new engine were perfect.

a very friendly harbour master even had a joke as he sees me out 3-4 times a week but never past sparkes marina.

thanks for all for the encouragement.

That is good to know. :-)

it would be helpful to many people if they had a webcam on the hard at itchenor.
twice this year i have seen cars slide into the water when the boats were too heavy for the car or when someone left off the handbrake.

I did my PB 2 out of Itchenor - a lot of water has flowed under my bridge since then - but we did not have web cams etc to play with. Sorry, but why would web cams help people just being plain stupid? Oh. just to see how stupid/silly/ignorant folks are? I see!

Good job that web cams were not about when I launched my first boat - a 14ft Fletcher - down the slip at the Camber in Portsmouth Harbour. All the way down from where we lived at that time I was saying to SWMBO remind me to put the bung in! We arrived in Portsmouth, dumped the boat in the briny, parked the car and trailer and headed off. After about 5 mins, heading towards the entrance my daughter - about 5 at the time and now 23, said "Daddy, there is a lot of water in the back1 I looked round and the poor kid was up to her waist in water. SWMBO got it in the neck - you forgot to remind me to put the bung in said I!

Just goes to show how silly/ignorant/stupid boaters can be! Oh, it all ended happily and after two hours of draining the boat we had a very nice day! I have never done it again - left the bung out I mean.

i think a webcam at ichenor would be good so i can see the weather conditions where im going to launch and potter about for a few hours.

i try not to be cocky but what are some of these people thinking when they go to sea in a 30yr old wreck covered in gloss to hide the cracks in the fibreglass and a 30yr old engine that hasnt been run properly for many years, one i spoke to last week said it would be fine because the man he bought it from said it would be ok, it wasnt and he had to be towed back to itchenor under protest

If their boat is that bad when they launch from Itchenor, chances are they will never make it out of the harbour, so at least they will be easy to find to rescue when they wash up on the mud somewhere.

the one i saw was an old speedboat with a smokey 150hp 2st that rattled. it cut out within a minute of starting it, with a loud knocking noise.

it floated off towards apuldram . they were towed in pretty quickly but the rib rescue crew had a stern word with them.
it looks like on the face of it that 90percent of boats and outboards on ebay need scrapping.

Sounds about right, most of the e-bay stuff has been sitting around somewhere for years 'cos it ain't really up to it & the currents owners aren't prepared to put the cash & effort into sorting them.

Having said that there are real bargains from time to time, just enough to keep the punters hopeful! :D
