with all the encourgement i got from you good people i decided to leave chi harbour for the first time on friday.

superb hot and calm day and went out to west pole and then 2 miles further and my little shetland 498 and her new engine were perfect.

a very friendly harbour master even had a joke as he sees me out 3-4 times a week but never past sparkes marina.

thanks for all for the encouragement.

after waiting another week i drove down to speak to the manager and he was very apologetic. they were having problems getting the alco axles or something like that.

they discounted by £100 and had it delivered to itchenor hard and showed me how to winch it on and off and they moved a few rollers around and the boat sits perfectly on the trailer with a 60kg noseweight which is what my car manual says is best.
also they supplied a better trailer with a swinging rear end when originaly i'd ordered a fixed rear end as i didnt know enough about trailers to spec it propery.
very pleased in the end as i got a very good trailer for £1400

the boat and outboard performed perfectly with very little fuel used, was at 1/2 throttle until got into harbouth coming in with the water rushing out and needed 3/4 throttle.

Very satisfying when a plan comes together innit? Remember that feeling next time something goes wrong! :D

Little by little, bit by bit you will build experience do it slowly & the problems are more likely to be simple ones. Take your phone in a drybag next time & you can post a few piccies.

piccies next time i promise. waves a lot bigger today so stayed at home instead.
tomorrow all the boys are at school so may put her in the water if wind eases a little bit. wont leave the harbour unless wind is ok and waves are small.

the engine needs it first service so booked in for wednesday in southhampton.
if the weather's good and its light enough i may find somwhere to put her in the water at soton for a few hours

The site i use most to figure out what is happening with the weather is the met office site.

With a 28ft boat out of Sparkes, any time "our" part of the picture goes red is generally bad news. In a shetland: they are great boats for their size, but you really don't want to be going over Chichester Bar when the tide is rushing out and there is much wind from the South. ( been there: done that: got thrown around and had to put on a fixed smile for the rest of the family ).

Jolly good.

What happened about the trailer?

That's why the performance of the boat was not as expected :p ;););)

Must have been the day for it:D

We had visitors on board and actually left Chi for the first time in a year and ran over to Gosport for the night.

It was a brilliant run and I had forgotten just how interesting it is on the river around Portsmouth:D

will keep look out for another calm still day and venture out of the harbour and along hayling and back into langstone harbour. ive been around hayling the other way but not out to sea yet.

Launching the RIB at Conwy, tide quite low, steepish ramp, quite a number of people about and a queue to use the ramp.

Back the the trailer smartly towards the ramp and Mr Farty-Knowall comes over, "You don't want to do it like that! You'll get stuck! You must put the trailer on a rope and then let it down, you can use my rope if you like."

Me, "We'll be fine, thanks."

Drop the boat in, park the Landy and get the boat ready for departure. Meanwhile.... Mr Farty-Knowall has taken a long time getting ready to launch in the manner suggested to me. Trailer half way down, rope snaps and then follows a high speed launch of the entire combination!

Fortunately he left the side straps on so the trailer stays with the boat, which is floating a little lower than intended, and heading downstream at six knots!

Fired off after it, secured it alongside and fetched it back to the ramp for him.

I was very good and didn't laugh too much while fetching his boat back! :D

ive seen some really silly things at itchenor hard this summer.
normally cheap ebay boats with dodgy, smokey engines and first time boaters who entertain everybody with their launching antics
