It has probably hit the UK TV news already... The oz reporters and cameras were all waiting for Tony to arrive in Albany after being out of communication for 11 days. Somehow he managed a spectacular arrival as one bow of the cat attempted to climb onto the wharf. The man on the bow waiting to tie up appears to have leapt into the water(or into the net) as the bow climbed about a meter out of the water.

Tony of course has a special place in our hearts after the rescue 10 years ago south of here.(Fremantle) We still give the advice to sailors when they lay a boat over under spin. " Make a nest for yourself up in the bow and we will come and get you later."

Well done Tony ........ olewill

Some years ago Tony was invited to speak at our clubs laying up supper in London. He phoned whilst on the M4 to say he could not make it as he was lost!!!

Am I cynical? Before he "went missing" nobody knew he was sailing to Oz. Suddenly he is back on the news and his website is telling possible sponsors how much coverage they are missing out on.

Why do you think that people down here who met him a couple of years ago quickly dubbed him as "Mr Tony B***S**T" ?

I dont feel sorry for him.. I cant believe he does these trips on his own money, so I think he is a sponger with an aptitude for failure.

brave, but stupid?

bit harsh to call him a sponger.Companies dont sponsor him out of the goodness of their hearts only becauise they know he inevitably will create lots of publicity.

That, IMHO, is a vacuous thing to say. If I'd done a tenth of what he'd achieved, I'd be proud of myself .. great to see a man of his years enjoying himself.

Why IMHO??? look, just go for it, like this.............

It cant be obscene or the naughty word nanny would have deleted it. Something to do with vaccum cleaners perhaps?
Or bowel evacuations? go on Jimi give us a clue /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dangerous thing this sailing solo round the world, whole lotta balls in my opinion.
Problem is the press (again), find a figure of fun and keep digging, especially when they ain't young and pretty and milking the press machine for all they're worth.

I'd hesitate to say that to his face. He competed internationally and successfully in Judo, ran a number of 'hard' nightclubs, and is still built like a brick-built 'dunny'.....

Oh, and he's quite used to people not liking him instinctively. As if he gives a toss.....

'Jimi' has it about right.

Just my perception, and my opinion, even if I'm the only one.

I dont doubt that he's tough, and hard... he has to be to do what he does. Perhaps he pushes the boundaries and is well meaning aswell.

He came and gave an excellent talk at our club a few years back; I found him to be a modest self effacing chap who was good company.

Good luck to him, I only hope I can do half of what he does at his age.

Isn't that a contradiction in terms? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

One UK newspaper report last week, suggested that you original PoM's (Prisoners of His Majesty) /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, were still spitting blood over that rescue. Cost you poor Oz taxpayers a bloody fortune & your Navy didn't even get a 'thank you' from Tony (as reported).

So wot's the real attitude amongst you blokes about him?
