Out of interest just searched on Google for the make of our boat - Ryds 23T. Much to my amazement the first of just 2 results thrown up by the search was my bio off this forum. So people knew my name, could send me PMs etc. which seems a bit risky.
Is this normal ? Can I do anything about it ?
PS - Ryds is now for sale.

I have just tried it with the name of my boat and I came on on google to, wish I knew how that worked, have been thinking about getting my company web-site listed but so far have failed, but all our bio must be in the search engine.

Sorry this doesnt help but hopefully someone will be able to answer.

I am still not sure how "britemp" could display your IP address and other info, hopefully he could explain.

google works by sending out a spider which pulls back in masses of data which it then ranks in order of importance.

One of the methods it uses to rank a site is the amount of links to that site are found. I think it also uses hits, but not sure how it measures this to remote sites.

I have found that by using my site in my signature file my site now comes quite high in the ranks of many search engines, on the first page of many. It is important to have relevant information in your meta tags, although lie about content and the search engine will reject (I don't know how).

YBW gets excellent ranking, I presume from the forum which gets a lot of usage, so any info contained withing the site will also get high ranking.

Ps. This is presumed knowledge gained from reading web magazine in waiting rooms and trying to glean info from the google homepages. I could actually be very wrong in the way search engines work, there are IT people on here who will know exactly how they work.

I don't make it till the third page..

But seriously, I don't much like it, couldn't the profiles be made invisible to non registered/logged in viewers?

<hr width=100% size=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

Well I never...

I did a Google search on Dave_Snelson and the entire page on Google was devoted to me!! Whats more the first line at the top was my profile.

S'pose I could change my name to the boat's name like some other folks do...

Can't totally understand all the concerns.

Why is it ok to allow about one million people to be able to view a ybw profile, but not ok for say 100 million?

Well I'm not exactly sure of course about the ybw surfing figures, but let's face it, one's profile is available to all who choose to visit the site.

All google is doing is focussing attention on the site, not reducing any security or making it more widely available.

You profile is always free to be browsed by whoever.

well just maybe we are all too free with personal information, like when we are away, when our Boats are unattended and where they are, especially those on non marina type moorings without security.

Probably just being over paranoid

Bloody hell
I think maybe I had spaces between the wording of my profile name and thats why it did not find it.
Bloody hell again
I am somewhat shocked, however I am not sure weather to be worried or not. Exactly what info on our profiles could be a concern do you think ? Also is it possible for the powers that be at MBY to restrict the access to our forum from such a search ?
Bloody hell again again

Can't see the problem. Firstly does it matter where someone views your profile from, be it using google or directly from the ybw forum. Secondly, if I wanted to find out details of someone who owned a boat it's unlikely that I would be able to guess any of our user names, do a search and come up trumps. I'd just come here and find loads of details all in one place.
Lastly why bother, just go to any marina on a weekday and take your pick!!
