I don't understand this AIS warning

We have a Raymarine Classic (that just means old apparently) C80 chartplotter and an auto pilot. We've just had a Mcmurdo M10 AIS fitted which seemed to work ok when the engineer was here. However, when we started it up for the first time today an alarm came on "AIS no valid COG information" I acknowledged and removed the alarm but each time we power up it comes on again.

I've looked through the AIS and Raymarine manuals but can't find anything to tell me why this is coming up or how to get rid of it. We were moving the first time the alarm came on but have been playing with it in the berth since then.

In the AIS alarm list there are 4 alarms which do not seem to have been acknowledged all with the same time:-

"AIS no valid COG information"
"AIS heading lost/invalid"
"AIS no sensor position in use"
"AIS no valid SOG information"

I don't want to ring the engineer if it's something I should be able to sort out myself.

Any ideas?

I assume the ais receiver is expecting a data feed from the plotter. Course, speed etc.

There is probably a lead between the two. Seatalk / nmea?

The things that would impact comms would be the wire has come loose / unplugged or the plotter configuration is not correct to support the device

The spec says it has an internal gps. It then goes on to say it combines the gps info with other nav info. Gps restart? Gps antenna loose?

But if you have just paid a bloke ..... Call him!

Is it just that there is a delay before the AIS receives the correct NMEA sequence from the Chartplotter. Perhaps as you are stationary the chartplotter is not sending out the sequence that often. Are they both switched on at the same time, if so perhaps the chartplotter is still awaiting capture of the satellites.

They are both on the same switch but the chartplotter captures satellites very quickly and the alarm sounds after about a minute.

Old thread I know - but did anyone solve this? I have the same McMurdo AIS fitted with a Raymarine e125. When I start up, the McMurdo gets its own GPS fix, no problem, but doesnt get any heading or COG until we start moving. Unfortunately, instead of sending a random number between 0-360 as a COG, the AIS sends an invalid (-1000) figure as a COG, causing the Raymarine chartplotter to scream an alarm. Of course, Sods Law, the one alarm which cannot be turned off on the chartplotter is an invalid COG. Any ideas?

Did you find any solution to this problem? I am experiencing the same problems with my Raymarine C80 and Camino AIS.

Did anyone find a solution to this problem? I have a Raymarine C80, auto pilot and a Camino AIS and get the error messages AIS no valid COG information and AIS heading lost/invalid every time I turn on the chartplotter. When I acknowledge them and start moving it seems to work ok. When I stop the alarms are displayed again...

Any help with this is much appreciated!

Now I have found a solution. On my AIS it is possible to turn off these alarms by setting the AIS in config mode (connect it to a lap top via USB and run the configuration utility software). Here you can set the parameter “ALR Sentence” to “OFF” and these alarms will not be displayed on the chartplotter.

The reason why these alarms are triggered when the vessel is stationary is that when the vessel has no movement, it has no COG or HDG.
