I couldn\'t believe it!!

Visited Penton Hook Marina last weekend and outside the sales office were a number of boats for sale including an Atlantis (big buggar) around 40 ft+ targa style boat. I assumed new, but possibly not.
I was appalled at how atrocious was the finish of the gel coat, highlighted as it was dark blue. It reminded me of some of the early GRP boats from the 1970's.
The day really deteriorated as we walked down to the sales pontoon and were confronted by one of the new, slab sided Sealines. It would have been a worthy entry in MBM's "ugly boat" competition.
Now I like some of the new designs, both inside and out, but externally I want a boat to be pleasing on the eye. I really struggle with designs like that Sealine.
Perhaps I'm just a boring old fart?! (answers on a postage stamp)

Re: I couldn\'t believe it!!

Styling is a question of subjectivity. Chris Bangle the BMW stylist was castigated initially, but the current 5 series still looks great after 6 years and no other large saloon gets near it.

So time will prove Sealine right or wrong, but I do agree that they look a bit heavy compared with the more traditional styles.

Matter of opinion that. Personally, and I speak as somebody who has owned several Beemers including 3 Bangleised ones, he was the worst thing to happen to BMW since bubble cars went out of fashion. Interesting to see that the BMW board took fright and shuffled him off upstairs after a few years and the later Bangle models were much less bizarre to the point of blandness in the case of the latest 3 series. IMHO, the current 5 series still looks awkward both inside and out especially on smaller wheels. I have to look at my SWMBO's 520d every day and I still can't think how anyone could think the shape attractive /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: I couldn\'t believe it!!

BMW 7 series is one of the ugliest cars ever built. Very few sold. The "new edge" design by BMW must have been one of the worst thing they have ever done. Witness the huge increase in Audi's on the road. I do agree that the 5 Series is nice. Looks are vitally important - in particular cars. Anyway sorry I digress!

I quite like some of Sealine's styling and like the way they try new things. Fairline/Princess boats are almost identical inside and very similar outside. I still like them but it has to be said that you know exactly what it's going to be like before stepping aboard. Mainstream yachts are even less adventurous and are all basically the same inside. Maybe there is only so much the designers can do given that the boat has to first and foremost be........ahmem.....well....a boat.

On the subject of build quality, I do wonder how good some of the new boats are. There was a brand new (unsold) Sealine F43 (I am sure that was the model) at our marina and had been lying on the berth for many months. I think it might have been something to do with the Peters/Opal demise and as a consequence not geting a lot of sales TLC. I was amazed by the amount of rust coming from the stainless steel fittings. There was rust stains dripping everywhere from behind window frames, porthole frames guardrails, stanchions etc.... and will be a source of constant cleaning for the life of the boat. Funnily enough, the stains disappeared when (I think) the marina bought the boat from the administrators and put it up for sale. The new owner will no doubt have found out by now that his boat fittings are rusting away rapidly!
