I can't hear the CG on the Deben?!

I can\'t hear the CG on the Deben?!

We've just moved to the Deben (golly is it pretty) and moored in TideMill but either our VHF has packed up or we're out of radio contact. We can't hear or reach the CG. Is it all those pesky trees???

You should be able to hear something? Can you hear anyone calling on 16?

Have you tried to telephone Walton on the Naze CG on 01255 675 518 and ask them for a radio check (obviously when they are not busy).

Suggest you stay on the telephone whilst you call them for this test.

I would have thought you should have heard them from the Woodbridge area on the Deben but I suspect your aerial set up.

I could hear them very clearly at Ramsholt.
I think that they have a aerial at Bawdsey at the river entrance.
If I remember correctly there is high ground between you and Bawdsey.
This could be blocking the signal.
Could you see if anyone else in the marina can get them?

Hi Simon We are also based at Woodbridge.

We hear very little "chatter" on our VHF, in the River generally but at Ramsholt and further down can get the CG by way of a Radio Check.

I wouldnt worry to much at this stage but perhaps try a radio check next time you are at Ramsholt to Felixstowe Ferry.

Thanks for that. We had a dodgy connection which we discovered in April and thought we had fixed it. At Tollesbury we were 5 miles from a major CG ariel so that was no test. I got lots of chatter on 16 all the way up the coast then it's silent in Woodbridge. We tested it with a HH in the marina but that's not much of a test. We'll try it further down the river.
