Been saying for a while that I wanted to try non tidal Thames, so took the plunge and got the survey for a BSC. Needs some work, though not too much, so arranged to go to Sunbury and have the work done there.

Sorted tides for Tower and Richmond, decided the best day - today. Checked everything on boat and did a couple of quick trips last week to make sure all well.

Set off today and within 2 minutes the overheat alarm goes off. Assume its rubbish on the raw water intake (not an unusual experience) and throw boat around a bit (to consternation of passenger), turn to face the opposite way, all the things that usually work - but to no avail. Tie up to a rubbish barge (one of the moored ones - not attached to tug, obviously) and wait but still no joy.

Limp back into South Dock with minimum use of engine, which means I clip the lock side a bit harder than I meant to (because by now the tide is running full bore) and eventually back to mooring. Spend rest of day arranging engineers, lift out - you name it.

Why do we do it ..............

Real Targa, I am on tidal Thames, with same problem as you, I have modified my water intakes. Mine now come through skin fittings on brass tube with valve above water line,. this allows the hose to be removed and the rubbish removed. I can also blow down the inlet hose from the filter with with a piece of hose.
I do not know what your boat is, but if you have volvo outdrives, you do not need to use the water pickups through the drive for cooling the leg, so given the room yours might be able to be modified.
Ref. your lift out etc. I am a member of the Hurlingham yacht club in Putney
we have a dry dock for boats up to about 50ft. which is available for hire, at present for members only. We have membership vacancies as well and we open on Thursday evenings after eight thirty. We have members that are marine engineers and members that are not. We also have millionaires as members and care in the community as members (non paying). You are bound to fit in. P M me if you want further information. Alan

Alruss - Thanks for the info re the intakes - I will get in touch via PM to understand better what you have done. Anything which makes it harder to pick up rubbish would be a brilliant idea. I'd got no further than wondering if I could fit a basket filter over the intake, but it doesn't seem a popular fix. The boat's a Targa 25 (Botnia, rather than Fairline), by the way. And Hurlingham sounds interesting - though the practicality of coming through from Wapping may be a problem.

Cuchilo - I thought I'd stick around for a bit, either at Sunbury or maybe Penton Hook. I guess it depends a bit on how things work out at Sunbury.

Don't let those Birchwood owners find out, they'll send Ramage round to drink your Beer.

And trust me, even without his evil henchman, Alex, that's going to be a lorra lorra Beer /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I asked the Met what their filters were like last time they stopped and boarded - they didn't know....... but then they come off a pier which means they don't need to go through the accumulation of rubbish outside the lock gates.

As for a Sunbury massive - not sure a visiting east ender would count - but I'll look out for friendly faces.
