Just returned to the boat in Sardinia to find that some B*****D has nicked the cockpit instruments. Two year old Nasa Cruiser depth, wind and log mounted on a 53cms x 13cms black painted 5mm plywood panel. A chrome on/off switch to the left of each unit. I would be very grateful if anybody who sees this unit for sale, would pm me.
Sod's Law, replacement value is only slightly more than the insurance excess.

I'm really sorry to hear that! It must be sickening.

I've heard nothing but good things about the people in Sardinia (we are in Menorca and met quite a few people who have returned from there).

Do you mind me asking where you are in Sardinia and whether you were in or out of the water?

Will look out for any signs of your goods in Menorca in case anybody tries to dispose of them here.

Regards,

Bob

Sadly, this happened to mates of ours when they went ashore from their anchored yacht to meet friends in Sardinia.

They feel they were 'clocked' and reported on by mobile phone throughout the whole time they were off the boat in order to give thieves a clear run.

Funnily enough, they only lost 'non marine' stuff - laptop, cameras, phone etc. All the expensive boaty stuff was left. Boat trashed however. Bad time for all.

You don't go to Italy if you are sensitive to theft. In six years in Greece I heard of only one case of theft. A water pump pinched from the engine of a boat on the hard. I am not a detective but I would guess it to be another ex pat boat owner who was in the same yard. I two years in Italy I witnessed attempted theft three times and heard of other cases from boat owners.

France is far worse for thieft. In Italy i only had my bikes stolen and then i was told i should spend the day walking about town as it would have been take to get home not sell so i got one at least back!

In Savona i bought a bike from a Frenchman when i got into sta Margherita i met the owner of the bike and he wanted it back!!!He gave me some charts and an old fisherman anchor for it!!!!

I always found Italy to be crime free boat wise!As the Italian sailors would never steal and non sailors dont know anything about boat stuff and may just find they have stolen from the mafia!!So no theift!!Apart from bikes

One note when in France if you see a French person building his dream boat be very carful as while the buildings in progress nothing on other boats is safe.I lost everything includeing a old hf sailor receiver which was still mounted becouse i couldent undo a nut. Then id just bought a new boat and wasent liveing aboard the old one!!I was spoted by someone fitting out on the next key

Later a German stole my blakes heads !!Sometime later his wife asken we on board and i used my own heads! But what can you do???

Dont be too hasty prob not the Italians (too scared get caught) prob Albanians or other Eastern personalities who end up in that neck of the woods via Brindisi totally Skint ....the mobile phone bit has a hint of truth in it I spent a long time in Eastern Europe and Russia thats a well known ploy....best i heard was the a"new" Eastern (RICH) go to loo matey on mobile tells the thief he joins her/him in loo looks over door Hello!!with a handgun orders em to strip to undercrackers hand over the goodies watch, bag, mobile etc., and away he goes... not chased as the victim is semi naked .........

That was easy the lid seat and pump handal were white it was a rare oval model then the handel had a sligt crack in it the bronze base had at some time had part ground off (to fit?) and there was still the price marked on the pipe from the bowle to pump.

Hes gone now i dont know what happend to him but when i was in Bandol at another second hand shop i found a lot of things that had been stolen from another boat so i called him those things had been put there by the same German!!!And he dident take the discovery so well!!

He wont tell me what he did(after getting his things back plus money for the items sold)But i havent seen the German since.

My boat was broken into in Olbia in October while at the anchorage. I lost about £4,500 worth of diving equipment and other stuff. Police were friendly and blamed it on the Romanians. I started to read the small print and found most of the stuff was not covered as the valuables limit was 450 US$ with a single article limit of 450US$ and it was not a new for old policy. I moved the boat to Greece as a result.

Easy to condemn from afar: I have heard plenty about trashed boats and theft in the UK through this forum, but not once have I heard of a single theft from a boat (or indeed any house burglary) in my part of Italy. I don't even lock my boat and that's not rare: some people don't lock their cars, and that's in a city of 220,000 souls. Not all of Italy is like that, of course, but you should be careful of generalising about 'Italians'. In a sense, there's no such thing. And I would be as offended with your comment if I were Italian as a Brit would be to be categorised as a thieving football yob who can't be trusted with a glass of beer.

I went to school in Italy years ago as a younger (much younger) woman and loved it. Felt safe always. When my daughter studied in Firenze, the Albanians and gypsies had almost taken over the city--no one was safe from their antics. Even at the Vatican, I had money stolen. But...there are thieves everywhere. And there are many, many good people everywhere as well. Until recently, one could live almost anywhere rural and feel safe. Now? Drug problems, racial/ethnic problems abound.

Ah but what have the Italians ever done for us?

Sorry, couldn't resist using the title - and you make a correct warning against generalisations.

But on the other hand you paint a very generous picture of the honesty that is rife in Italy. There is a history of opportunism and corruption amongst their politicians, and the Mafia remains an enduring and uniquely Italian creation. Ok, Sicilian then.

Although of course, as you say, the same need not apply across the whole country nor across the whole population - it could easily be the fact (i don't have them) that there are more petty thieves in one country than in another. This thread and others, and the observations of others elsewhere don't make valid statistics, but they do indicate that Italy may not be way down that league table. Perhaps since your experience is very good - it might be really *heaving* with criminals in other areas?....
