I am looking to buying a boat which I am happy about and I have seen it started up but its last service on the engine was may 2014 (3 years ago) - should I be concerned? - it seemed to start fine

How many hours has it done since it was serviced ?
On the plus side it sounds like the vendor is being honest about service history.

If it's an Evinrude etec then they have a 3 year service interval.

If it starts ok, runs well and pumps out plenty of water consistently then it is probably is fine. Make sure it all looks ok under the cover......clean and in good condition with no corrosion. A sea trial might put your mind more at rest. 2 strokes are generally pretty reliable and can do many thousands of hours if well maintained and it depends on hours run since the last service as much as time. However if you do buy it you should definitely do a full service on it. Pretty straight forward to do it yourself with the help of youtube. (plugs, impeller, gear oil change, anodes, fuel filters). Make sure also that the trim tilt is working properly.

If the boat is out of the water you could perhaps see if the owner will let you drain the gear oil. If it's very milky/watery then it would indicate a leak somewhere (a seal or something) which would need to be fixed. It's a 10 min job (see youtube) to drain and replace the oil (about £20 worth of oil).
