Thanks to all the people who took the time and trouble to reply to me. A lot of you asked what I wanted a boat for. As I said I have no experience and was thinking of a Bayliner 212. I had planned on using it on Windermere but am not sure now about the boat or indeed placing it on that lake, but it is only about an hour drive from my home. Appears that there is a great choice of 2nd hand boats. I am lost, anyone got any further info. please I still want a boat! Thanks. Ps I dont want to tow.

Must it be a sports / motorboat ?

Wouldn't you rather drift dreamily along with the breeze on a balmy Summer's evening,

rather than thrashing around noisily, with a huge polluting engine, wreaking havoc and woe upon untold thousands with the wake ?

Spend a lot of time reading about boats, and talking to people. Clarify your ideas about what you want a boat for and what you want it to do. Start small, say a 12ft rowing/sailing dinghy, which will teach you far more than any power boat will do. You will know when you've outgrown that [some people never do] and need to get something larger. Let your understanding grow with your boat. I have seen plenty of people who have bought a large power boat and yet have no knowledge or understanding of its use, and never will have. You can buy a boat easily, but you can't buy brains and understanding.
Peter.
